I think what you are referring to is what people call "stretching" This happens once a plant is switched to a 12/12 light cycle. The plant is stretching for light during its dark cycle. From what I know some strains stretch more that others. I would have to assume if your talking about indoor grows this can vary depending on you set up (lights, room, temps) From what I have read and scene, I would say for a plant to double in size is on the high side of stretching but you should plan on a 50% increase in height at a min. This can be an issue if you cant raise you lights enough to keep the temps in check. My Barneys farm LSD, went from 20" at the end of veg, to 33" at the end of flowering. I am sure I could have got them to stretch more if I had the room height or if I had to keep raising the lights to keep them from getting burt. With the expection of autoflowering (I know nothing about them) I would say all weeds stretch some while flowering....so dont grow them to your max height and then start the 12/12 cycle.
