Do Silencers work??

Pappy has faith in silencers, if getting the noise down 50% will get you to a safe point then I would do it. If you think your fan is overkill on airflow, get a smaller fan. I would also try what Renfro said and get a little bit of solid piping.

Air is vented through the fan, ie cooling it. Heat is not a problem with insulated fans. They are ventilated by their design.

Of course if it comes wrapped its not an issue. Issue is insulating a fan housing that wasn't designed for it. The surface area of the housing and the btu it expels is a calculated thing. You insulate the hell out a fan and it produces heat, simple as that. The heat only moves on the surface it touches and has an effect. If the exterior heats and isn't cooled it will cause problems. Know that when that fan was designed it had a plan to move heat, fucking with that without knowing how heat moves, ie thermo dynamics, is risky. Was my only point.

Almost all fans are cooled by design.. Modern industrial exhaust fans also all have heat fuses installed. I insulated all my fans and ducting outside the growroom. I've never had to change any fuses and they don't even run that hot compared to other industrial applications.

Most fans have pretty high maximum operating temperature. Most of my fans got the max temp listed on the fan itself.

Some do.
 
With the 6 inch fan I have the silencer makes a noticeable difference. Silencer+ hanging everything by straps + turning down the speed controller makes it so quiet you can barely hear it at all with the tent closed. However, once I put a portable A/C next to my tent it suddenly seemed redundant.
 
Get yourself a variac controller, o - 100% power total hum free it's worth every penny, standard speed controllers are...well you heard it lol
Fwiw I had fans wrapped up for years, my fans had a thermal trip not to mention air cooled.

If you buy one make sure its variable tap and not stepped/pre set voltage, it will have a big dial on it like the one above.

I forgot to add earlier reducing the speed by 30% makes a big difference, having a big a fan and using a variac even better that lets you turn it down to say 50% which dramatically kills the noise, my neighbours sleep above my set up.
Bite the bullet and buy one if you want quiet you won't regret it I gtee you.
That buzzing you hear is the electric coils vibrating due to the unstable current.
 
Im gona look at these variacs i have never even heard of them till now. But this new rhino fan is very good and quiet with just the insulated ducting

Go for it, you'll have a professional ventilation system with the capacity to automate it for around £15\20 with only basic electrical knowledge.

I reckon I could walk someone through the procedure if they were confident with electric or a savy DIYer.
 
yes most definitely, its only around 50% and has the temps perfect i still have another light to turn on but i think it will still easy manage
