do plants really need fresh air?

if i was to grow in my closet there would be no way i can vent in fresh air from outside.. that is without the smell escaping which is really an issue because i dont want to be caught. i was planning to just grow plants in my closet and try making it airtight so smell doesnt escape and also add a carbon filter in there aswell as fans to blow air on the plants but i dont see how "fresh" air would be possible without odor in my house.. any suggestions?

open the window...
depending on how many you have....
I tend not to get a real strong odor until about week 5 or 6 flower....
No doubt the smell is there way earlier ... just not strong enuff for me to worry ....
Im a legal grower.... so my front yard ...or anypart within a 10 yard raduis from my room..its easy to smell at week 6....

Your gonna need to have some kinda ventillation.... its more a matter of having the toxic fumes escape ..that plants emit in flower...amongst other things
Plus with heat and mold issues to add on ..... your gonna have to have some source of ventillation.....
Imagine being locked up in a closet all your life.......with the door closed.....
This will result in unhealthy plants...
Id just ride it out and get some jasmine plants neer your windows.... that stuff has a very overpowering aroma.... and is a cheap fix....
Good luck

Just tape up your vents, and close your closet door. If you're using a decently sized exhaust fan with your carbon filter, little to no stank should leave your grow area. (Depending on how many plants you have)

Edit: Also making a home-made C02 generator helps if having enough breathable air is your problem

It wont be manily when the feds come knocking at the door....lol
But if your legal theres not much to worry about. besides weed thieves and people knowing youre bussiness...
I dont use jasmine flowers... cause i dont care if people know...
My neighbors obvouisly smell it....
Outdoor growers have shared the jassmine flower method with me.... ...
Dont worry the plants should be outside not in your room lol...

Honestly my veg area is in my basement in a make shift closet. I leave the door cracked when I am home and no one else is in the house with me. I am also legal. It may sound absolutely crazy but every day I spend about an hour with them to help increase the CO2 levels in the closet. Just by me sitting in there breathing with them in the room seems to help growth. However in my flower room I have a ton of ventilation and a carbon filter so that's a bit different. But I would recommend however if you do need to keep the door closed all the time to get at least a CO2 puck and a way to exhaust some air.

Unless you have AC with CO2 ammendment, you CANNOT grow without fresh air. Plants grow by using photosynthesis. Photosynthesis needs several elements for it to work, light, nutrition, water and CO2. Plants grow better at certain temps & humidities also but can grow in far from perfect conditions but not without the basics. It is like you trying to survive without Oxygen (did you see the film Apollo 13?) As the plant uses CO2 from the air, it replaces it with Oxygen, great for you, bad for the plant. Thats the bad news, heres the good news. Get a carbon filter & extractor fan, seal your room with one in vent & 1 out vent. Ensure you have less air being sucked in than blowing out, this creates negative pressure which will stop smells escaping unless they go via your exhaust which is via the carbon filter! You should be looking to exchange the air between 1 & 4x per min. A carbon filter reduces performance of fans by around 25% and bends in ducting reduce it by around 15%. This is the calculation you need to give you a well ventilated room. LxWxH= Room volume. between 1 & 4 times per min is recommended, I prefer 2x per min minimum. Room volume x 2=Air exchange. Air exchange + 33%(to allow for a 25 reduction, 33% has to be added) = Carbon filtered air exchange. Carbon filtered air exchange x17.5% (to allow for a 15 reduction, 17.5% has to be added) for each bend in ducting = Fan rating needed. eg, a 3ft sq x 6ft high tent with a carbon filter and one bend in the ducting would give the following calculation. 3 x 3 x 6 = 54cubic ft. 54 cf x 2 exchanges = 108 cf/m + 25% = 144cfm + 17.5% for bend = 170cfm. This is the minimum fan size for the spec room detailed. Hope this makes sense, if not pm me with your room size etc & I will work it out for you. Peace W

Know a gal that's growing a couple smaller plants in a relatively sealed cab.
She's burning a couple of those incence candles in the grow.
Inside of her place smells like fresh baked apple pie. Talk about "munchies"! (changes scent from burn to burnout.)
From what I can tell, it seems to work surprisingly well. The burning candles add CO2, and the smell is a good coverup. Wouldn't work on a K-9 pot sniffer though I don't believe.

I grew a few plants in my closet and they did not really smell at all until the last couple weeks of flowering ...
They grew fine i guess, the only problems were that it got too hot in the closet with the door closed longer then a couple hours ...

I was only running a 400 too ...

On the other hand, i have seen a flower room in the basement b4 with a nice carbon filter exhausted out the window ...
The door would stay open except at lights out ...
Even with the door open all day to help with fresh air coming in, the carbon filter would take care of any smells going out the door and up the stairs ...

u could also make ur own co2 thing with a 2 liter soda bottle and some yeast and sugar and water i think at certain ratio's ...

I think u need to come out of the closet..so to speak

Listen to Woody! Look into getting some sort of proactive odor control going on. A good can filter and fan combo would help you immensely if you can vent it outside (or even back into your room) Put a passive filtered vent in the door. Exchanging the air in the room or space should give them enough CO2. Supplement the filter with a couple of those time release air fresheners and you should be good to go.
