i'm in a converted barn, heat is not an issue. in fact i kinda need the heat from the light in the winter to help keep my plants warm. i have a good exhaust fan so hot air is pulled from the actual flower room and exchanged. i have a big hood, 21 x 21 inches, air cooled. i was having problems with my light turning all my leaves yellow. the heat was in the mid to low 80's at the top of the plants but the light still seemed to be burning them. if i kept the light low they would burn, but when i raised it they would stretch.

I use only 1000w....as far as I know more wattage = higher bill(yes thats true)
but yeah 1000w covers a larger area as opposed to a 600 or 400w. I also think the higher wattage the bulb the more lumens it puts out.Ive only used 1000w so I have nothing else to compare it with
I also use a 1000wt HPS and a 1000wt MH. It is true the electric is higher, but the higher wattage does put out more lumens and cover more space. The best part is the by using 1000wt to flower you get hard dense buds.

Try mountaing a fan at light bulb level and blowing it across the light. It will lower the temp a few degress and you can get the light a few inches closer.
(every inch counts)

are you going to keep the black plastic black???

i'm wanting to sheetrock it. it all started as a temporary dark room to induce flowering. then the next thing you know there is a light hanging in it. if i get into sheetrocking then i just may end up changing everything. maybe going 4 x 4 and increasing the height. i'm teetering on that line of re-doing everything or just leaving it all as is.

just put a 400w bulb in your 600w socket for a month. check out your light bill for usage difference and go from there.

Sorry i missed the temps when i read your first post. And i see from your second pic you got the fan blowing across the light, so i looks like you got things well under controll.

nice indeed fdd, is that as close as you can get your light? if so then you really need a better hood. i know every1 has their own opinions, but in a room that small you really cant go wrong with a cool tube. you can get really close to the plants, and adjust the light foot print untill your happy. ive had my 1000watter as close as 6" from the tops of the plants without burning them, but the light foot print was too small when i had it that close.
i know youre a DIY kinda guy. they are easy and cheap to make. i have a badass exhaust fan anyway, so i made mine for less than 40.00, and had it up and running in under 2 hours.

Yea redo it Fdd... level it and start over, theres nothing like a bit of DIY on a hot sunny day and now you have found your problems out it will be alot easer to fix and to not have these show up ever again

And

What about stepping up in lights over the flowering period ?

400w wk 1-3
600w wk 3-6
1000w wk6 till the end ?

how about a light mover across the whole room? right now i only use half the room. the other half is for my chair. can i throw up a light mover and cover a 3 X 6 foot area with it? have it move side to side? the hood is 21 inches wide so the light would only have to move maybe 2 feet back and forth.

if i can get away with 400w i would rather do it that way. i need to lower my electric bill.

how about a light mover across the whole room?

LOOKs to me as if the electric bill wll be riseing

Good idea though, would this be in a newly built room or keeping the old one

seems like that would depend on the number of plants you want to grow. if all you need is a 3x3 space.... then no need for light mover. though if you want to do the 3x6 space, you would probably find it easier and cheaper to get another light for the other 3x3 space. just my $.02

btw, i think i'm using that same black plastic on my room. nice lookin plants dude, as always

Yeah, that 600 may save you money, because you may not have to grow as often as you would with a 400. You might have to do one less grow per year to have enough bud, while the 400 would force you into an extra crop. Also, you could get some flouros for veg, and then only have to use the 600 while in 12-12, so it would stay off half the time. That 600 may actually be saving you money by producing more of your need per grow. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to grow a couple crops per year and then shut down your operation for four months? Less risk of getting caught that way too.

Not that Im In danger of getting caught, but I only grow say 2 times a year, and I still have an abundance of weed laying all over this house.....Just saves a lil bit money on electric bill and what not....This grow I moved 1 of the kids out of her bedroom(sorry hun) so I can occupy a larger area instead of my walk in shower.
