Do attics get hot in the summer?

Have about 30 feet by 15 feet attic. It has 5 inches of that pink insulation on the floor of the attic and the roof above. Will it get hot in the summer when it's 90 degrees outside? Or will the insulation keep it at a cool 60 degrees as it is now. There is a small hole where duct work goes outside from the heat from the dryer. So it's not 100% sealed off

It's going to get crazy hot up there. The insulation is to keep the house temp stable. The attic can get 20 or more degrees hotter than it is outside.

That bitch is gonna b a pressure cooker. Attics get really hot. 90 outside is gonna b 115+ no joke. My great grandparents (when they were still alive) had a place with an attic. N the summer ud go up there and plastic storage tubs woyld b warped and saging and other plastic would b melted. Maybe with the insalation it might keep a more regular temp but either way ur for sure gonna need some cool air up there running constantly.

Actually removing the insulation would help it cool... its going to get extremely hot in the summer, you will have to insulate the ceilings heavily and have a wicked air ventilation set up. I wouldnt do it unless you have to because you will probably still have heat issues. You could try insulating heavily with fiber batting and sealing it off completely making it a closed loop system and running a good sized AC to pump cool air in. its not going to be easy. basements are key

i've seen my attic get up to 140°F on hot days, for sure down to at least -35 in winter. definitely not good growing material. like thedillest said - basements are key, otherwise closed ventilation would be your best bet. you MIGHT be able to get away with mad fans in the summer if you were venting your lights properly. who knows. give it a shot, or just grow outside.

Sorry, but sometimes my jaw hangs open at the things I read and drool drips out. Then I slowly come back to life.......................and read the next thread....................and it happens all over again :-?:eyesmoke:

Yeah attics get hot as fawk if you haven't heard that yet haha


IF you want to grow in the attic:

a) grow in the winter
b) if in summer build a room inside the attic and insulate it from the rest of the attic as well as the roof. Pipe fresh air in and venting into the attic is ok, but fresh air from the outside is a must. Also attic fans to pull hot air out of the attic will help cool your attic and your house if done right.

I love it! I'll add upon this too. A properly vented attic with insulation should be the same temp. as it is outside of the house.

If you insulate it really really well and put an AC in and have it sealed with a co2 tank and strong dehumidifier, you should have a room to be envious of. Could be really awesome just quite a bit of work to it. other plus is people coming over wont wonder why you have a strange room that no one is allowed into. But it might be weird if you have strange humming noises coming from the attic haha

Humming noises= attic fan to keep the house cool. Very common these days, especially with the economy.

By now I am sure you have the point. The only thing I want to add is the amount of $ it will cost to run an AC loop to cool the attic will totally negate any savings you will get from growing our own, and then some.

That's a bit harsh, granted they aint cheap to run but they not that expensive. :hump:

Yea I think your underestimating the power of good insulation, but were talking GOOD not some shit in some places and nothing in other, and not no insulation noooooooooo way

could be done, people live in well insulated attics all the time

If the room has an 8 ft ceiling, and it can be drywalled in, sky is the limit. It'll take at least 1 or 2 portable, DUAL hose AC's, but it could be a great space if built properly. Be ready to spend big money on construction, real big money on equipment, and real real big money on Cali electric bills, but it could work well with the right person doing it.
