I've never heard of that but it makes sense. I'll keep that in mind when I put the tomatoes in this year. They've been dug up the next day every year for as long as I can remember. Total PITA but the funny thing is they (it?) never dig them up twice. Kind of like they're just checking to see if I put anything good under there.
Chipmunks and skunks probably. Chipmunks are eating the tender new roots, and skunks are eating the grubs in the soil. Both are attracted to the scent of disturbed soil.
