If you go the box fan route and are going to build your own blade you don't have to reverse the motor. Just build the fan in the opposite config. of the original. Put the leading edge of the fan on the other side.

i looking at my boxed fan and thinking aabout what you'll talking 'bout
maybe you mean to move the blades closer to the back of the fan

+rep to you that 5hit,
people should know this stuff!

here is a video of my prototype home made trimmer.
i need to do some tweeking to the blade placement to get a closer trim. but it still saves time!
enjoy

its a rotary tool with a kitchen knife chopped off and double edge sharpened.
my total cost into this is $12. since i already had the rubbermade container.
the $12 was to purchase the BBQ replacement grate from wal-mart.

i like how they just placed a cutting blade on top of a fan blade (wow $300 for that) - this idea has just changed every thing, thanks for the look inside
maybe i can screw a sharpened metal ruler ontop of a box fan (like they did.. thatnks Big P )

this kind turn your nugs into balls

ya i noticed that too seems they use a 2 blade system, mybe that helps witht he cutting too if they spin in opposite directions, but man for $300 shipped that shit is a steal, 28 grams of nugs will purchase it. I just dont have the volume enough to warrent getting one but i want one anyway lol

these days i just do a real rough trim with some snips and smoke it all practically.

but i'm also willing to diy some shit nomatter how much cash i have
this thing looks way to diyable to cost more then 30 bucks
i'll prolly try to make it
i got a wooden ruler that i'ma superglue some razor blades too, then i'ma screw it to the top of this old ass box fan i have
then i'ma used the 290$ (10$ for some glue and razor blades) that i saved to get some chicken and beer ..lots of it LOL

There is an advantage to having the fan AND the blade. The airflow from the fan will draw the leaves into the blade for better cutting.

Im thinking with the right micron filament you can sew up a trash bag type catch to line a round 12-20 gallon round trash can. Add a brace with fan toward the top including a small grill top or fan shroud. Use a plastic hobby box or plastic junction box with lid for your speed control and power switch and your done. A few modifications to this design of course would probably be in in order.. I will hit up some second hand stores this week to see what parts I can get next to nothing.. also reclaiming switches, nobs, and other miscellaneous goods would also be a good way to go. The trash can would need some large diameter holes strategically placed to not cause a vacuum effect. The fan pressure would be sufficient enough on its own.

^check this out.. would work in a 8" plastic pipe for a catch for premade. Thinking this might be good for the small builds.

I don't know if this appeals to anyone but Target has 10" High velocity fans w/metal blades for about $12 I believe it was. I just picked one up & used it for an intake fan & I bet it could be a great start for a trimmer. I'm actually thinking about going & buying another one now & mounting it in the top of a large rubbermaid tub to catch the trim ! Would be less then $25 total

its one of those old school metal box fans
with the motor wire revirsed so that it spins back words

all i need is to find one of those fans
or maybe find a way to sharpen the blade of the plastic fan then change the spin

wwwaaay cheaper then a spin pro
AC powered fans will not reverse if you reverse wires,,only DC...so just reverse the blade and bend the edges so they are closer to the grate

I got excited reading this thread. I'm very much a DIY guy most of the time. I wouldn't spend $300 for something I can build for $50, but then I looked at the ebay links posted above.

This one is only $188 right now.

I'll watch to see what it sells for, but if it's under $150, I'm not sure it's worth my time to build one. This looks like a pretty sound design. It has an actual cutting blade and the fan to direct the clippings into the mesh bag. It looks like it would be fairly easy to remove any built up resin as well (can't let it go to waste!).

I'm only just now starting to setup the grow room, so I'm far from needing this yet, but it can't hurt to start thinking about how to minimize trimming time. I recall spending many many long nights trimming. If I can avoid that sore back I would get from this, it's worth a little $$. ;)
