DIY LED Help

Hey guys, got another stupid question. Got my heatsink today and was going to power it up to make sure it works. Any easy way to do this before i cut the plug off? Also, it has three wires-red, yellow and blue. Would i be right to assume the yellow is the ground? Red/L blue/N? I used to know this shit!

Not sure on the CPU cooler hopefully someone who's used a arctic 11?? can help you out.

No wiring diagram wth the cooler? If it's anything like my PC fans the red is hot, blue is neutral, and yellow I cut off the excess wire since that normally hooks up to a computers pwm control. The pwm connection slows and speeds the fan according to CPU temp as far as I know.

I can see how a lot of seperate units would make for a lot of wiring and plugs. A design like greengenes drone or the light bar builds are nice since they are probably integrating the fans and leds to one main point.
 
Yea i figured it was the way you described. If this build goes well i will likely build a couple more and link them together to run on one plug each for the drivers and the power supply for the fans.
 
Dc is actually positive and negative after a quick check...not hot and neutral. That's why I don't like giving out electrical advice..lol.
 
Instead of cutting the plug off the fans, cut the other end of that plug off from the Y connector that came with the artic 11 (i think it came with that one... or it came with my other fans i got..). Anyawy, attach that to 12V and just plug it into the fan. Now you can unplug the fan easily.

Must have been your other fans.
 
How many 3w 20mm stars could i passively cool on this heatsink? http://m.ebay.ca/itm/190709689287?nav=WATCHING_ACTIVE
I was also thinking of mounting the drivers on the top. Suggestions? I can draw up a really rough diagram if it helps to visualize.

Roughly estimating that this heatsink won't handle more than 10-12 Watts of heat .

Depending on the quality of leds used ...

Roughly calculate : Total led Vf * If * 0.7 (<=30% led radiometric efficiency ) = Heat power <= 10-12 Watts
.
Total Vf = 12 / 0.7 = ~ 17 V ..
17 / 3.5 ( blue dies / white leds @1000mA ) = ~5 leds max
17 / 2.5 (red / FR dies @1000mA ) = ~7 leds max .

Subtract mcpcb and TIM thermal power transfer losses ..

Say this heatsink might be able to keep relatively cool 3 to 4 blue / white leds or 5-6 red/ FR ones .
Leds driven at 1A .

Really a rough estimation.
Addito salis grano .(added a grain of salt )

Like i said in your thread...wish i was as smart as you guys lol.
But thanks for the reply because i was thinking 5- 660nm reds on either side of two Vero18's mounted on Arctic 11's.
Damn, i wanna build something!!!
 
Was thinking about getting those for my Veros but I never did figure out if the area between the slots is wide enough for the metal backing on the Veros but if it is it seems to be a good platform for the Vero. Might as well ask them.
