I have noticed that while the COB is on it emits infrared that throws off my temp readings. Same with the HPS if I am near it. So I have tried to take the temp of the COB surface an instant after turning it off and it was reading 32C. But that was on the passive heatsink. Good call on the little dot, next time I will try measuring there on the active sink just after clicking it off or while shielding the infrared away from the measurement dot.

So this brings me to the next question...

So if we were to consider only the thermal characteristics, what would be better:
1) Thick heavy aluminum with fan
or,
2) Thinner aluminum with fan.

I'm thinking the thick.. but I'd like to hear others opinions because sometimes these things can be counter intuitive.

Yep, assuming surface area is similar, the thicker aluminum will reduce the temp gradient from the center to the fins. Thinner heatsink will have the heat "waiting in line". CPU heatsinks seem pretty well optimized for COBs.

Have any of you folks tried liquid cooling? I have a bunch of 3/4" x 1.5" rectangular aluminum tube with a .125 wall.. I was going to cut it into 4 foot lengths, tig weld the ends closed, drill and tap for hose barb fitting, and run water through the tube.

The liquid cooled tube could be a stand alone unit or I could daisy chain them together and have a loop going out one and into the next. I'm thinking to use the copper/aluminum radiator (~6 inches x 10 inches) out of an old dehumidifier for a heat dump, and just a normal computer muffin fan to pass air through it.

I have a 12 volt dc pump that I got on ebay for $3 and does just over 500ml per minute.

I bet I could mount 300+ watts worth of leds to that tube and keep them all happy and cool.
