Tan's DIY Halogen Vaporizer

Takes about 1hr to build.

Tools:

Hammer
Phillips Screwdriver
Drill
1in wood drill bit (not the flat kind, but the round one)
Drill bit to drill air hose line (your choice of size)

Supplies:
UtiliTech 120V 20-watt Xenon Accent Kit light

1 or 1 1/2 long 3/4in Dia. brass pipe fitting
1 Brass Cap fitting to match
air hose line
1 Hardwood base (I used a wood couch foot)

What To Do:

Drill a 1inch hole into the base, followed by a half inch hole.
The half inch hole is for the lamp chord. The 1 inch hole is for the
1inch brass pipe fitting.

Drill a hole at a diagonal from the top of the base, through the side. This will be
for the air tubing.

Drill at least 1/4 inch hole in brass end cap.

Remove the light from the casing. It should then just contain the
lamp chord and halogen light with socket.

Place the brass pipe fitting into the 1 inch hole of the base.

Place the lamp chord and socket down inside of the brass pipe fitting.

There should be about 1/4 in or so space from the halogen light to the top
edge of the brass pipe fitting.

Under the base I drilled a groove so that the unit will sit flush. You can
use some pegs for stands if you like.

Almost done!

Take wire mesh and use a quarter for a circle guide (if you don't have any
screens around) Cut TWO of these.

You need two because the herb will be sandwiched in between both screens
and placed into the top of the brass end cap with the hole.

Screw the brass end cap onto the brass pipe fitting with bulb in it.

Insert air hose, and plug in.

Vaporize will glow a yellowy orange due to the reflections off the brass.
(Looks like fire almost).

Within 30 seconds, you will see vapor appear. Gently inhale and enjoy!

Warning...do not peer directly into light. It emits UV radiation. That
is why I have the end cap on it, with a hole in the top for the vapor.

Pics to follow.

Thanks! I recently added an on/off switch for it. BTW you can use whatever shape of glass you want :) I've a square one on now.

Haha so i saw this post about a week ago and decided to make one, once i hit Lowes home improvement store i realized a huge change that would mean the performance of this vaporizer. I built the same vape with a dimmer to control the heat level, and instead of the round glass, i used a 5inx5inx5in glass vase , my base is also about 5x5x5

Fresh! That's so simple.
How well is that dimmer switch
working out for you?

Can't wait to configure my own!

Built my own today, instead of using a vase like they did, I used a jar and attached the top to the wood so that I simply screw the glass into place for use

I have read that xenons have much longer life than halogen but run at a lower temperature. Should I use a 20 watt halogen or 20 watt xenon?
I have seen 10 watt halogen vapes so 20 watt xenon is probably fine...

THE DIMMER IS PHAT - and i even went the extra bit and got a nice silver knob from radioshack - also temp mesurements it goes as high as 450F (my IR temp isnt accurate over that so it probably can get hotter... but ive left it on for over 2 hours)

Which type of bulb did you use? I also have a question as to whether you guys covered the light with the brass and have the brass heating the herb or if you just have it held above the light.

The brass is the containment unit, you are pulling the hot air off of the bulb through the herb. You need this airflow for vaporizing, this heat is coming from the bulb ( SO YES ABOVE THE LIGHT ) not too far, but not touching, theres about 3/4 inch of space between the tip of my bulb and my bottom screen

[-----] - screen 1
[ ## ] - herb inside brass fittings
[____] _ screen 2

What did you guys use to connect the electrical cord wires to the pins on the bulb? The electrical tape I am currently using keeps melting/burning and space is pretty limited.

I would solder them but I don't have access to a soldering iron.

the halogen lights just plug into the wall right.. ... i found one laying around the house but its just the light ficture that has the 2 wires coming from it.. i then hook that to a wire with a plug on it and plug it in and it blows the light.... i did that 2 diff times... i dont know why... i got a dimmer too and when i hooked it up through there i tryed it on low and it started to flash then i turned it up and it blew...this looks really cool and i really want to make it... but the instructions are kinda hard to follow ... maybe if u had pics for every step or something easy for ppl .. but great job

I bought a 120V rated 20w bulb at home depot. It was like $3. I just hooked it up to the cord and it worked fine.

The bulb you had probably isn't made for 120V?

Looks like my project for the week. How efficient do you think it is compared with traditional methods?
