Diy auto top off system

i would disagree. an isolated feed res will have a steady pH and EC while an rdwc system (at least mine did) needed almost daily ph adjustments and the EC dropped alot by the end of a week
Im saying its a lot less complicated having a rdwc system compared to a float valve( that have malfunctioned before) ,to fill dwc.
Your better off just using a big tote for dwc rather then a pail.Less chance of floods.
The more water you have the more stable it is.

I have a 25 gal one site rdwc system that is not set up at the moment but will be soon and I have all the stuff to build another two site rdwc that will have three 27 gallon totes that will probably be about 45gal. They will be under current with waterfalls or spray bars so no air stones. I guess I'll just scrap the auto fill idea. I thought it would be cool to have floats in my two reservoirs that fill them when get low.

Back in the day with HPS and lots of heat rule of thumb was 1/3 water in grow room 2/3 outside in a cool spot.Didnt have chillers for rdwc.Led lights need 80+F temp so having all that water in a warm room doesn't help.

Running large pumps for waterfalls etc doesn't help either.Small pump for recirculate and small pumps for air kept the temp down.

Yeah even if I gotta cut a hole in the tent my rez will be outside of the tent on the cool basement floor. I have a external pump but it's to much for the one site. I might try it for the two site when I build it. It's probably to much still.

I run a rdwc *with* a top-off res. I use it to stage all of my res changes, and keep the RDWC at the same water level at all times. You can also use it to steer the EC/PH.

1. Flip a valve to fill res with RO water, add nutes and PH.
2. Valve off the res, drain the RDWC.
3. Valve on, fill up RDWC from res.
4. Fill res with 25-50% nute strength and let it top off until the next res change.

You do need to watch the EC/PH trends to see what the plants are doing and adjust the res nute strength accordingly.

What nutes you use? I'm very intrigued and interested in doing this. I am worried about the EC and the nutes and all that. If you don't mind I'd like to pick your brain

Jacks RO, epsom salt, and hypochlorous acid (UC Roots).

Basically just need to watch what your plants are doing.
If EC is dropping, bump the res strength.
If EC is climbing, drop the res strength.
If EC isn't moving, let it ride.

Can I add gh trio like that and if so how, its 3 part? If ec dropping just mix up a stronger batch separately in a bucket then add it? Don't be mad lol. I've been doing dwc for a while and usually top up with water then just do a full bucket of nutes after a couple days. Im only doing 5gal buckets atm. I've had a bad last year and haven't set up my ucrdwc but I'm getting ready to do a build and gonna set shit up right. I appreciate your input

Doesn't really matter what nutes you use, just make sure to follow your feed chart for the amount of water you add to the res and account for your target EC.

Always mix the nutes in the correct order and you should be fine.

Also, here's what Current Culture has to say on the subject of top off reservoirs: https://cch2o.com/rdwc-grow-tips/

Apparently they recommend to load up the top off res with the nute strength for the next week's schedule, which makes sense. I've done that before but never consistently, may have to give that a shot.
