Direct and Indirect lighting

Heres a different question that i have yet to see here. Could you possibly grow a single plant in a 3 gallon bucket thats just stuck in the corner of a kitchen window that only receives 'direct' light for approx 3-5 hours per day (depending on what season) and 'indirect' light for the rest of the day?
I have windows on the northwest corner of my kitchen that lets in a whole hell of a lot of indirect sunlight throughout the whole day and only a few hours of direct sunlight. My tomato hydro bucket is currently in that corner and has gotten huge so far and we want to use that corner for another bucket with some high quality bag seed. But we aren't sure if this situation would work for growing cannabis. Any thoughts?

your plant would expend most of its energy searching for a better light source and grow incredibly thin and stretched.

Sure it will work. Usually if you are growing in a window you will want some supplemental lighting and you should put a curtain of reflective material around the sides and back of the plant in order to maximize the light that the plant gets. You may be disappointed with the results if you don't use supplemental lighting but, hey, give it a try.

So if i were to hang a large wattage cfl from the hydro store over the plant without propping up a reflective wall around the plants, then i would not have to worry so much about stretching? I do want the kitchen to look strange with a corner of it sectioned off by some sort of wall. Then the combo of indirect/direct sunlight and the large cfl would suffice? I realize that tomatoes grow differently than cannabis so i hadnt really thought about the stretching issue...good point though.

A large CFL placed as close as you can get it should help. I have never grown in a window before so I'm not the authority but I have known people who did it successfully. Best of luck my friend.

exactly, there is no point to supplementing a window sill grow with cfl light, you may just as well grow it under cfls!

you will run into probs due to the ever changing position of the sun as well.
That too has crossed my mind. With the changing of the seasons from Summer to Fall right now, i have noticed a difference in amount of available sunlight. Good point indeed! But on that note, i have a verified female from my number two plant. I take all three of my soil plants out of the grow box and put them in the window for some fresh sunshine and she sprouted hairs within 4 days of exposure. Unfortunately both my number one and two plant are in declining health and not worthy of attempting to clone. I think im just screwed on those two..

Uv etc cannot penetrate the glass so your plant is surviving not thriving. IMHO you are wasting your time putting it on the sill, but if you want to go ahead, any clones will be weak and leggy with poor internodal distribution.

Damn. So all that direct sunlight they get for a few hours out of the day really isnt any better than being back in the box with all the CFLs? Even if they are getting filtered out uv rays?

Im growing tomatoes in the window sill from little 6 inch clippings with some direct and mostly indirect sunlight. And i have noticed a lot of newer/greener growth on my two struggling plants after being in the window sill and my number two plant even popped out a few hairs..Could i take some clippings from the newest/greenest growth on my #1 & 2 plant and raise them as clones in the cfl box even though those two plants as a whole seem to be suffering? https://www.rollitup.org/marijuana-plant-problems/232797-lost-all-hope.html

I never clone for cloning sake, but thats just me. You could do, there is nothing to say they wont turn out fine. I have spent nearly 20 years growing and nevered followed a set of rules, that way you actually learn more. Never be afraid to experiment and always remember there are many ways to get to the end result you desire.

Thats good to hear and quite comforting too! Thanks! Im still a bit nervous about my only three plants just because it took me so long to accumulate these high quality bagseeds but you have set me at ease a bit more. I think i will take at least three clippings from both my struggling plants as sort of a safety measure in case they both die. After all, it is just a weed and weeds can be hard to kill...!

If your plants are as bad as you say then I would suggest waiting for signs of rejuvination before cloning. Why? Because stored carbohydrates are depleted in a dying plant and stored carbohydrates are the building blocks of new growth, especially in clones.
