Dinafem's "Original Amnesia"

Last June I ordered Dinafem's Original Amnesia from Attitude Seed Bank:

The smoke reports were very favorable, and I've had (up to now) great luck with Dinafem.

I have to preface the smoke report by saying this was my first attempt at growing sativa-dom plants. I quickly found out that sativa doesn't grow like indica (I can hear everyone say DUH!) and I was often frustrated by how this plant grew out. For the most part, it wasn't the plant's fault...but mine.

For the most part.....

I had three of these plants going at the same time. One is the subject "trying Uncle Ben's topping technique" which was a runt. The second one of the three was my "Plant on acid". This is a pic of a clone of this plant...both the clone and mother were yanked. The mother...after 9 weeks of 12/12....didn't produce one bud. Both plants had branches that resembled limp rope more than a branch:



The last plant grew as described and the subject of this smoke report:




This plant took just over 11 weeks in 12/12 to finish. One of the biggest things I've learned growing weed is patience...and this plant taxed my patience often. It's the winner of "The most stakes used to keep the plant standing" prize as I think there were close to 10 holding this sucker up.

So.....one runt, one on acid, and one that took forever......a frustrating strain for sure.

The yield....well, it's still hanging but it's my guess I'll get a bit more than 2 ounces dried and cured:



I cannot comment on "bag appeal" yet, but the nugs I've pulled for this smoke report were very dense and sticky. The smell is yet to be determined but as of now, it has a light hashy fragrance.

Taste: Um....uh.....wow. I swear I'm smoking some fine hash when I hit on this joint. The flavor lingers even minutes after taking a hit. This may be the tastiest weed I've grown so far.

Buzz: As of this moment, I've had four hits off this joint. I'm not one to describe weed as some do wine, but more about how much it took me to get how high. The buzz matches the taste.....a hash high, nice and clean, zero couch lock, and very pleasant.

Overall Impression:

I'll get the bad out of the way first. I cannot recommend this strain as I feel it's unstable and for how much yield I got for 11 weeks of growing was a good return on my time and investment.

It was interesting watching how sativa grows differently than indica. I have a few more sativa's in 12/12 at the moment, and honestly, they're not impressing me either. I have a Dinafem "Royal Haze" that is the poster-child of stretch.....all branch...very little substance.

The good:

This may be my best weed so far. I really like the buzz and taste. Here's a pic of the upcoming harvest of Amnesia using UB's topping:



I have high expectations (pun intended) for this plant. It may give me 3 ounces. I don't know if it was UB's topping or just another variation of the strain, but this grew much different than the other two. It'll be ready in a week or two.

That's why I grow sativas, for the buzz.
Sometimes they are stretchy and take forever to finish, but the smoke is uplifting and cerebral.

If you can find a 70% - 80% sativa, the indica will shorten the finish time a couple weeks, and you can still get the head high.
A lot of 100% sativas take longest, but finding a cross with a little indica will usually shorten finish times.

My goal between now and June (when it gets too hot in my flower room) is to pump out as much weed as possible. I'm focusing on strains with flower times of 8 weeks or less. I've done the math and I'll do much better with strains like Mataro Blue or Karmello from Kannibia Seeds.

When I start-up growing again (Late July to plant seeds) I'm wide open to growing something different. Right now I'm going to pump out at least an lb every other month.....if the growing Gods are with me.

+1 there.

In my experience the more interesting scents and flavors also come from sativas (or sativa-hybrids).

For what its worth, this particular haze is about 80% sativa/20% indica, so the 11-12 week flower time *IS* shortened here, at least compared to some of the 14-16 week hazes.

Also, a lot of growers find it helpful to grow these sativas 12-12 from seed (or even 11-13) to help minimize overall vertical height of the plant and keep these more manageable indoors.

I have to agree that the buzz I'm still enjoying (taking "maintenance" hits off the same joint) hours later is better than the indica-dom I've grown so far. The taste is great too.

I think I'll do this....grow one sativa-dom fem at all times and try out different strains until I find my "the one" that fits in my grow schedule and yields 3 ounces per plant....and is a strain that grows consistently and not all over the place as the Amnesia has done.

Not sure what you mean by "all over the place".

The pictures you have show a classic sativa. . .branchy with long thin colas. That's what these things do. Of course the continued growth during flowering and overall stretchiness are what makes these hazes more challenging to grow indoors. They key is, you need to take control of your plant early and make it do what you want it to do, not let it "go wild" so to speak.

If you don't like the branchiness, you can always prune off lower growth. If you do it early it won't reduce yield; the plant "compensates" by making the top colas larger.

Also, if you start early you can control vertical height by training the plant limbs to grow horizontally. There are multiple ways to do that (SCROG/trellis, tying down, bending/"low stress training", etc). How you do it is up to you and your particular conditions, but IMO its worthwhile.

Also, you may find starting with a clone or multiple clones (rather than a ceed) to be really helpful here, because you can put these right into flowering when they're small. Doing that will signficantly cut down on overall plant height and branchiness, making the plants growth much easier to control. Doing this also lets you pack in more small plants per square foot, "sea of green" style, increasing overall yield.

Remember, if you're trying to maximize yield the goal isn't specifically to max yield per plant. Its to maximize yield of the whole garden per unit TIME. While its possible to get good yields with small numbers of plants, typically that requires a lot of extra work in terms of topping and training them. Plant counts are an issue, of course, but all else being equal, lots of small single cola plants will usually outyield a smaller number of untrained "bushes" in the same space and time But either way, the key is to make sure as much of your lighted space as possible is filling with flowering tops.

Thank you for your great info! I'm sure you're correct about everything you posted, and I readily admit I know very little about growing sativa. I knock Amnesia for its inconsistency on how three plants grew three different ways.....it wasn't a good first-impression as I could train one plant and the next would "go wild". I think Rockymtnman's suggestion of getting 20%+ indica in the mix would suit me much better than the 10% Amnesia had.

I am open to suggestions of what strains would fit the bill for me. I typically veg 5-7 weeks (around 20" tall) and am trying to have a flower (12/12) time of around 8 weeks....or less. I've been averaging 3 ounces per plant with my indica, and would like to match that with whatever sativa I grow. I don't know if what I'm asking is possible or not.

My experience is the higher yielding plants are usually less potent + flavorful.
I prefer a 2oz plant that has strong taste+effect than a 3-4oz plant with little flavor and mediocre effect.

The most potent bud I've ever grown/smoked wasn't very dense/hard, but the smell/flavor/effect were one of a kind.
Some people prefer the high yields/hard buds/body effect of Indica's, but I prefer the flavors/heady potency of Sativa's.

70-80% Sativa is what I like, enough Indica to speed up flowering + shorten plant height.

There are many good indica hybrids with the sativa effect.

Well.....I guess I'm like many growers....nice yield, fast growing, great taste, and amazing buzz. I've got some Mataro Blue that has fit the bill with fast growing, looks like it'll yield nicely, and I'll let ya know on the taste and buzz by the end of the month....but it's indica-dom. I DO enjoy the indica buzz, but the sativa high is a nice change after smoking indica for the past 10 months.

This morning I started looking up fast-growing sativas and the G13 Cinderella looks promising, but I seem to remember a few threads where people were not happy with G13's products. (I just noticed I'm wearing my G13 T-shirt from the tude).

G19s Cindy and Pineapple Express are both verrrry nice. Haven't had any of their other stuff.

TGAs Jilly Bean is a really euphoric buzz, good yielder, awesome taste, and sex appeal. Delicious Seeds have great sativa hybrids I've been told by several. Great pics and info on this thread...https://www.rollitup.org/seed-strain-reviews/573969-delicious-seeds.html

The only problem I have with Jillybean is there's no fem seeds. While many have no problem growing weed only to have to toss out 1/2 of the plants, but I do...my grow space is very valuable to me and prefer fem-only.

I got a seed as a freebie afew years ago and it completely surpassed my expectations. My particular pheno was exactly like that described on the website...short and stocky, good yield, and done in 9-10 weeks. It produced resin on par with anything else ive ever seen and the smell was ridiculous. It smelt like a pine forest blanketed in sugar which was extremely pleasant but the real appeal was how "loud" the smell was. The smell from only afew nugs would completely overwhelm a jar full of any other strain. The high is typical haze for the first couple hours(heart pounding, potential paranoia, GREAT music weed) followed by a strong couchlock thanks to the northern lights. Although ive grown and seen many great strains of bud, very rarely do I find one that impresses me the way the amnesia did. I lost the cutting but now have a amnesiaXcasey jones cross that im doing my initial run on. I will see if I can upload pics within a few days

BTW does anyone have solid information on this strain. On some sites it says its just another SSH pheno, I disagree about that. Dinafem says its HazeXNorthern lights, and others...wtf. So is it just hazeXnorthern lights or what exactly? Does it have any relation to SSH or Amnesia Haze for that matter? Is it the Southern Holland Cut, D-Cut, etc? There isn't a lot of info about this strain and much of what can be found isn't consistant.

The Official Weigh-In: 74 grams. (2.6 ounces). I guess I should stop complaining about the yield.

Great for an indoor sativa! Should feel really good from nice accomplishment and buzz! Let me know when you want to skip UBs caveman methods and kick it up a notch

If you're talking about the 43 step and wait several months process of making soil...uh...no. I really think I'm going to suffer with Happy Frog and Ocean Forest.

Anything other than that, I'm always open to ideas on how to improve my grow. I eventually want to average 4 ounces per without a scrog (that type of growing doesn't interest me right now).

And as far as Uncle Ben...between him and rockymtnman their suggestions all have worked for me. Not one bit of bad advice. Hell, there's been too many times I've given bad advice....so their batting average is much better than mine......and many others for that matter.

It's hard for me to argue about sativa right now. I'm ripped out of my head on this Amnesia. I had a stoner friend stop by tonight and on his second hit his eyes rolled back and said "HOLLY SHIT this is amazing weed". Considering he just moved back from the West coast, I take that as a compliment.

I think you should look at Positronics. They have Jack Diesel. That is Jack Herer x NYCD. I have a couple journals on this one. I grew it three different ways. I grew one straight up, one topped twice for four main colas, and one I LST'd in a 10 gal tub. The LST yielded the most.
It was a 65 day finisher. Great lemon and pine flavor and amazing cerebral buzz. Very stable genetics and femmed beans. It was a beautiful plant and a breeze to trim.
