I remember unfolding a giant road atlas, and arguing with everyone in the car about the best way to go 
The first big "breakthrough" I remember was Mapquest. You could print off your directions, or write them down. Then personal GPS changed the game. I'm with Padawan, I look over and write down my directions, just in case.
