hello, pics would help. but with CFL's its ok to put the light as close as 1-3 inches away from the TOP. each plant should have 100-150 watts of CFL.. you can use 2 23 watt cfls that emit 100watts of energy on a plant..

goodluck.

4-5 inches? sounds like they stretched, if they start to look lanky or droppy just slit a straw down the middle and put around the stem, like a splint, use for support.

It should int I mean I have had some cases were i have used to straw and my plant has died but most of the time it dosen't affect the plant in a negative way, positive if anything

u can place cfl's as close as possible .. heres an easy way ,,, get all ur lights set up about 6 inches above ur tops ,, then stack up CD cases under your pots for height control ,, while the lights are on ,keep a little fan on ... my method is ,,, if you can fit your finger between the tops & the bulb ,, thay are too far away ,, .. insert another CD case ,, make sure they dont touch the bulb they will burn if left touching bulb for a hour or two... with close CFL's it will lead to very tight internodal spacing which is a good thing ...
