A quick question for all you old school guerilla growers.... which is better considering the cu ft of each hole would be the same.... digging your holes deeper or digging them shallower and wider? Thanks in advance for any and all replies!!

i always dig alot of dirt out i go down about a meter and across by about 2 i always fill it with compost soil that i have made only issue i have is them getting to big but i would say dig down not across u can start adding a top soil say about 2 weeks into flower when the roots system starts to push across the soil and u get some big ass tap roots

I would go with deeper cause I have seen wind lift root systems out of the ground! (you could see a huge mound as it was rising up, had to stamp it back down and lay some slabs!)

I'm not able to grow trees. I dig a hole the size of a five gallon bucket. Once they get big enough the roots will even penetrate clay.

I was figuring deeper was better just for the simple fact of the hard pan being impenetrable for root systems. That being said wouldn't the roots be able to penetrate wider into the shallower native soil on their own?

The tap root always goes south as far as it can. I take it that you are wanting to go in ground and not usr bags? So next i would think about the weather in your area during flower. Ig you have harsh winds and no covering then then you should dig deep as you can. If you can get pass the clay then thats even better for you. If you go shallow then bye bye ladies.

LOL, bye bye ladies? Stake your plants if wind is an issue.
Trust me on this, @Joedank gave the correct answer and the reason why. Why do you think Smart Pot growers are so successful......it's all the oxygen the roots receive.

I went deep last year but.only bout half a metre got shit harvest this year went a metre wide and metre deep and got 6x my previous harvest so ill go with wider for sure...and when i pulled the roots out you can see where after a certain distance the main tap root started going wide and not deep.

From seed…the tap root will travel deeper. Clones try to develope a tap root but from my experience they tend to develop a wider root system.

I always dig a 3 foot diamter and work the soil 18-24" deep and amend when I'm planting directly into the ground.
That's for both seedling and clone.

Yep that 3ft is approx 90cm so my 1x1x1 metre hole is pretty much the same.
If u remember correctly (and my memorys fucked lol) the size hole i do takes about 300-350 litres soil mix
