I wouldn't worry about space you can have that hps 6 inch away with decent air circulation and the close it is the fatter those nugs will be. Look around your room and find the shadow your light creates around the room and move your light down so that shadow line is a couple inches above the tops of your plants

I think I got the right distance now. The light is about 16in above the tops and the temp is now 78degrees max. Once this grow is over I am going to gut my cabinet and raise the light so I can do a hydro setup. I have two of these Homedepot Cabinet One for mothers and clones and the other for flowering. They work great.

That's where I keep my 400 -- about 6" off the tops, with air directed right through the space between the tops and the bulb. The plants frickin' love it, man. The only reason I move it up from there is the overall coverage falls off when the tops get too close. I'm never more than 12" off the tops.

I think the recommendations for 16-24" are crazy-far-away.. like trying to grow in shade.

Really i keep mine at around 12" and if they get any closer they start drying up like crazy, I guess i don't have the proper air flow but 6" away-damn my bad then i guess. But i know what your talking about with the 16-24" reccomd. waay too much stretch! Anyways let this guy get back to his journal lol my bad dude!

Ok so I think I have some root issues. I have to water every day and yesterday I saw roots coming up from the top of the soil. So I topped off the soil so light wouldnt get to the roots. I am in week 6 of flowering and I am in 7in x 8in pots. Do I just stick with them or should I transplant?

Don't transplant now, but know that you started out WAY too small.

Let them finish out, your yeild will have suffered some, but that's what a first grow is all about. Now you know you need bigger pots, and I'm sure you've learned about nutes and about lighting and ventilation etc....so overall a success.

No doubt that I have learned a lot form this. Its a lot of fun doing trial and error. I am already set for the 2nd grow. Going to give ebb & flow hydro a shot.

I'm an Ebb & Flow Hydro nut. It's fun, easy and works.

The thing with the light debate, I dunno, I keep my light about 8" off the tops, but I'm running 2 400s real close side by side, like reflectors touching close and My temps at the tops right now are @ 82 degrees.

Some would say that's a little hotter than desired, but I get dense fat ass nugs off my two 400's compared to my boys 1000w with the same strains I usually bust off comparable if not better yeilds of denser, better shit.

The 400 just let's me ride it low and in the last 4 weeks of flower I'll run my portable A/C and it'll blow right across the tops and I can get it well within 6". They'll be up in the hood by the end and they come out like ROCKS.
