dark period during flowering

i was wondering how important total darkness was. outdoors plants are exsposed to moonlight, and sometimes that light can be vary bright. or how about cars headlights? i cant imagine it having to be 100 percent light proof. im sure its a good habbit, but seems extreme. if you have a 400 watt bulb 6" away from plants on for 12 hours and then it clicks off for 12 hours, the plant must know its night time, small light leaks or not. i know there is if you can see your hand in front of your face theory, but who really knows?

DIDDO I need to know the same thing.
Someone told me that it can cause hermaphrodites but I was more concerned about working them with a regular house bulb when the grow light was off. I also have a very dim belld over from veg room to flower room for 6 hours of the flower room dark cycle.

i didnt say use a bulb in your room. there are green bulbs you can use, but i am definitly not talking about using a dim light.

my cab when running the lights, shows some light through the cracks. i have weather strippin in there, but that 400 is super bright. now, in my bedroom i have dim lights, and i keep my closet door open, but my cabinet closed. i cant see getting hermies from that.

the moon light is the wrong spectrum plants cannot see it... your room needs to be as dark as possible meaning black.. if the plant can see light it will try t use it and cause problemswether its bright or dim the plant will see it and try t use it

I think the main problems with light leaks is a lack of consistancy, if for example your dark cycle goes until 10am every morning however the rising sun casts light in a window which your open box was beside, I dont think it would damage your plants because the sun rises (at roughly) the same time every day...shoot me down if thats wrong but I just think its more about consistancy in your cycles than anything else.

you are correct consistancy does matter give or take 15 min now nd then but compleat darkness is needed during the dark cycle for best results... depending on how much light leaks determins the effects some plants can herm or not properly flower ao not flower at all if its too much ive seen em herm with a lil light ive seen em fine with a lil light it depends on strain ive seen em not flower at all and just get sicker and sicker... darkness is what you want. if you can see your hand in front of your face its not dark enough. why risk it if ya do things right you will get rewarded if not you could end up angry and wasteing time
