Cut out 4" fans???

So I just read on some site that said minus stem that you should cut out all fans that are over 4" long. Anyone heard of this??? I never have. I have plenty of huge fans so not sure what to think...?

Leaves create sugars and are essentially the powerhouses of a plant. Much like mitochondria in your cells. Destroying them isn't going to bring about any real benefit. Topping is another matter.
