Because the edges are less than 100PPF so its really not benefiting on reflection on the edges and its not going to give you maybe a few more grams like around 1-2G. Seems silly to be worried over that compared to around 1200PPFD in a 4x4 you know? But for HPS its the best option. I have all my clones ready, I just need to move my Mom plant into a closet I cant access. More measurements will come. Ill show the difference like I did with the short "penetration" Video that in my signature.

I saw you did the test on ppfd depth intensity. Good job! I was trying to explain that poeple. @sixstring2112 check out the test MeGak did in refferance to our discussion a month or 2 ago. It's shows perfectly how the drop is so very significant using low current, spread cobs.
Great ppfd on top but a huge drop in depth. Although I was surprised to see it was still on par w/ the ppfd of the DE even after the drop. It was quite a bit higher I top though.
Soft Cobs spread out is great for scroggiesh.

My plants yield around 0.75g per umol/s. So 100 umol/s would net me 75g. I'm not discounting that

Whether that light makes it through a leaf is completely besides the point. If it doesn't, that just means it got absorbed and used by the leaf. That is not what "penetration" is. Although I agree that "penetration" in whatever definition weed growers use it is more or less useless.

On the other hand, I do see more "penetration" from COBs than I had with HPS. The COBs provide a much more diffuse lighting with the light coming from many directions over the canopy. That means it's much easier for the light to slip through the canopy.

I get about .8g/roomW so I can relate... At least with HPS that is...cobs already kill it from what I've seen, I can't wait till I can flower and have a smaller energy bill lol
 
you know what id like to see?

a side by side of the cree reference design with the same wattage of NGL's quantum boards with lenses. now that would be a fair fight! i guess youd have to supplement the NGLs with some mono reds tho it seems most people using phosphor-based warm whites dont have a need/want for additional monos. 3000k vs 4000k+660 isnt all that different. 3000k 90cri would be even closer and also have some 730

Samsung just released 90 cri in lm561C :)
 
SO I am still learning a lot through this build and I should say the @CobKits was correct IMO on the cree test after looking at it more (and about Blackdog from a different thread :)). Sinkpad is ridiculously expensive and I am still waiting on my 3 samples like everyone else:).
I don't realize why they chose not to use any of the XT-E Royal blues in the finished design either so I am going to make that change with mine. The five foot height scares on their model and seems suspect to me a bit but time will tell and I am wondering if they will need to be spread out more to have a lower canopy height.
 
I would bet 800w of low driven quantum boards would rival this cree experimental lamp.you could do like 4 boards 3000k ,2 boards 4000k and 2 boards 5000k.all the colors of the rainbow :) driven super soft like 50w per board i think they are pushing close to 200lpw

Well I'm proud to say that I tried to order two but I was only able to luck up and get one of those Quantum boards.:hump:

I was up late doing some research about those CREE XP-G3 and thought I found something new,.... you never know until you try8)

As far as the Cree reference vs the Gavita this could very easily have a different outcome if they installed the SR reflector insert into the Gavita. Or one could check out Nanolux. They have a square reflector made to target a 4X4 area.

As far as quantum boards vs the reference design. I tend to think if the same amounts of money was invested in a Quantum boards build they would be superior.

Multiple light sources are better than single ones. Redirection of light destined for outside the growing area will also increase PPFD within the growing area. Focusing will accomplish the same thing. The reference design includes technologies used in LED lighting that waste less energy on heat and producing photons that aren't used for growing. Same thing with QBs, strips, etc.

Reference design target audience is commercial operations. Makes it easy to anticipate operational costs over the expected lifespan and allows the entity to have whoever they want assemble using an already vetted design. When you are looking to have 10k fixtures of this size built, you will probably be going with a fairly well established vendor to fulfill the order.

Of course that isn't to say we can't use them for hobbyist purposes. Effective growing area is what we all want to know from a light and this provides enough information for us to determine how it would perform.
