Thanks for asking, diggity. I'm think I'm going to make a can style filter with the carbon. I've got most of the materials together, just need to find the time.
So I can still use the fan I have the inside of the can will be 6" and the outside will 8". With the amount of carbon I have the can would be only 10" long, so I'll be buying more and make it about 18" L. Do you think that sounds OK?
As for the box I made, I took 2 of the 4 filters to help increase air flow. Since my biggest problem is heat I needed to move more air. In the end it will probably end up being an over done Y-pipe to cool my lights.
Things aren't to critical right now. Real soon I will be making some changes to my room. As long as it is done by then I'll be happy. I do plan on making a air cooled hood for my light as well.

I have a few pics of what I have so far. Still need more carbon and a inner and outer liner. I'm considering a stocking for the inner, but don't know how I feel about using it on the outside. Will it really hold the carbon in place? I'll probably try it with a stocking first if it doesn't work well I'll try a filter.

With the screens, as long as itspacked well, and the nylon is stretched to a decent tension, it should.. If mounted horizontally, and it rustles to become a little bottom-heavy, just add more carbon up top..

It is six inch coming out of the light and 4 inch out of the filter. The outer core of the filter is 6 inches and the inner core is 4 inches. Here is a link to the instructions I followed to make it: http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?p=509470
And yes I am using a 250 watt in the reflector but there is a 70 watt HPS next to it and the temps are just fine exhausting through the filter

I have a question for anybody still paying attention...
When I bought my carbon, I noticed the have the pellets and they have powder. I bought the pellets thinking it would be cleaner. Does it make a difference wich one I use? Should I buy a bottle of the powder and mix them or just stick with the pellets?

Its a toss-up between increased surface area with powder, versus containment/airflow..

I'd think it would be more of a difference in airflow with the pellets being the better flowing filter, but the powder would be more effective. But how much so?

No, there is an endcap over both interior and exterior cylinders..

ok, so I didn't do a full DIY. Actually, I only took three pics. Took me an hour to assemble. Total cost - $160 and that's including the 2-speed inline 300cfm fan. Bought everything from princess auto and home depot (except the nylons, they were bought at walmart). Just have to wire up the cord and hang/plumb it. Anyway, it's so close to what others have done that a step-by-step would just seem repetitive. Part of the reason the pricetag was high is because of having to buy more than I needed due to packaging size by the retailers. So when I only need 12"X48" of screen, I had to buy 24"X5ft. Doh well.

thanks, all said and done I prolly saved myself $50 or so, but the fun I had building it doubles that. Plus it's built for my operation, not some off-the-shelf unit. We'll have to see what it does for temps in my room. I'm still "renovating" as fast as I can to be ready for 10pm when my lights are supposed to come back on.
