Personally I prefer looking at the buds on the plant. Tiny cuttings don't necessarily reflect the overall state of the plant's readiness

Generally speaking, sativas have the long, narrow leaves. Indicas have wide, flat leaves...and also tend to have the skunky odor more and be shorter and bushier than sativas
