I must say that if I had more vertical space, I'd be less inclined to defoliate. I think it works for me due to the size of my space. If I have 6' of vertical room, I'd probably just prune to keep the air moving...dunno..
What I'm doing now works great so I'm good! It would be nice if we could discuss this like adults and not attack one another..I mean we're all trying to get to the same place right?

if the leaf is not productive then the PLANT will drop it on its own...btw leaves contribute more than photosynthesis hence why plants retain even yellowed leaves for some time....but that is ok as with anything else it seems you know better than the plants do what they need and do not need...myself I let them tell me

I'm not sure where this argument is going but if someone claims they are getting better harvests using the defoliation technique, why is there a need to prove them wrong!
There are alot of variants that will help/harm a grow resulting in lower/higher yield, Growing is very individual and personal. Despite some growers using the exact same equipment in the same space, some will yield more than others due to enviormental/genetic factors; and believe it or not some growers even claim yield increases with defoliation.
Seems like this is the new politics section of RIU.

I believe you are correct: the plant will release the leaf after it no longer needs it, but, only after it (the plant) is near the completion of its life cycle (toward the end of flowering). However, If we take the plant to our created environment (indoors) can we not save the plant some energy by exerting our own on its behalf (taking branches and leafs it will never have a use for)? It is also my belief that a plant will hold onto underdeveloped branches and the associated parts just in case the plants looses its top branches-- like a fail safe for survival. Also, what is auxin?
All in all, I have nothing but a logical conclusion from experience and a little information.

I was just thinking, we are argueing over what is natural for a plant to produce the largest buds...But is growing with bulbs, indoors, in closets natural? Kinda ironic, don't ya think

...we're not 'arguing' about what's 'natural', we're discussing what's 'optimum' for us as indoor growers to maximize our yields, ...there is some debate as to whether or not strategic pruning stimulates new growth and increases yields, ...i think everyone agrees that indoor growing isn't 'natural', nor is de-foliation.

The only defoliation you want to do, is to increase air flow through out the plant. During the 1st 2 weeks of flower the plant grows more than at any other time in its life. After this stretch things can get a little thick, I always remove fan leafs(maybe 10-15%). I like to see a little light hit my dirt. This helps with evaporation and keeping the RH down. I also do it to prevent mold. Now as for all the little growths at the bottom, snip them bitches. No science just common sense. If you have a leaf that isnt getting much light and it goes limp, prune that bitch. If you got colas at the bottom that never see light, get rid of them. Remember you give an energy boost to the next 2 nodes when u pinch a lower one off, plus it no longer has to provide nutes and energy to that cola. And if you think this hurts the plant or stunt it, you forget these leaves are designed to come off in wind storms and other natural events. The marijuana plant is a tough plant, I would not want to meet it in a dark alley, oh wait I would! I bend, prune, top, tie-down my plant, 2 hours later the bitch wants more!
Now total defoliation would just be stupid, it's an opinion. Although, some say I GROW THE BIGGEST BUDS WITHOUT FAN LEAVES. Well good for u. I grow the most bud with my fan leaves. Also, there is only one scientific way to increase yield. CO2. 1500ppms of CO2 will increase ur output by 35%. I bought this bag of EXHALE, $26. Normal PPM in a room 300. Over a 6-9 month period it will increase the output to 600-900ppm. If I want more I can add another bag.

I have gotten so much bad advice on this and many other sites, finally I figured out to trust me and listen to my plants.
I am sympathetic to both sides of the debate and think both sides are expressing opinions and no one is arguing the same thing.
From my experience, not defoliating at all caused me to have a lower yield and more lower quality buds.
Defoliating a bit has worked really well for me.
So if you want to talk shit about my grow, maybe you should come over and see if you can do better?
Defoliating must be variety dependent too. I have had plants that didn't like to be topped, much less defoliated.
There are so many variables and so many defoliating techniques no one is arguing about the same thing.
It is like the flushing debate, no one has the same definition of flushing.

HAHA, gotta love the debate over this subject. First off there will not be any science backing defoliation anytime soon. So no need to bring the Science card into it!! Also, so and so said it's wrong and not beneficial 50 years ago, doesn't count lol. I would say to try it on one of your own plants to see the result, but I'm sure all the "know it alls" will just sabotage the test plant to prove that they are right. All I know is I seen the difference first hand. It's why I choose what works best for me and my set-up. That being said, If I had a big gro with multiple lights or under the brightest light in our galaxy, I would prolly just leave it be. Although this season I will defoliate a few outside to see what works best. Peace!!
