Coal miners ask Obama to stop ‘absolute lies’

BEALLSVILLE - Coal miners at the American Energy Corp. Century Mine said they want President Barack Obama to stop what they term the war on coal - and to stop spreading mistruths about them.

Miners gathered Friday afternoon to express their opposition to Obamas energy and environmental policies, which they believe threaten their jobs. Miner Mitch Miracle read aloud a letter the miners mailed to Obama that outlines some of their concerns.

The miners said Obamas campaign team is running ads filled with blatantly false statements about the miners regarding their participation in Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romneys August campaign stop at the Century Mine. These ads assert that the miners were forced to attend the event by the mines owner, Robert Murray.
There are numerous false statements and absolute lies concerning our participation in this event, mostly started by a local shock jock radio host, the miners letter to Obama states. Why would you (Obama) lie about the 500 working miners who have signed this letter? We, the employees of the Century Mine would request you immediately stop these false ads.

This summer, Murray Energy Corp., parent company of the Beallsville mine, cut or relocated 56 workers with the closure of the Red Bird West mine near Brilliant. Murray also cut 29 mining jobs from The Ohio Valley Coal Co.s Powhatan No. 6 Mine. All of this was done, Robert Murray said, because of Obamas war on coal.

Murray then hosted the August Romney campaign stop in Beallsville, during which many miners appeared behind Romney as the former Massachusetts governor spoke about the need to protect coal mining jobs. In response to the assertion some have made about the miners being forced to appear with Romney, the miners made the following points on Friday:

As for anyone who claims the miners were forced to attend, those on-site Friday said these assertions probably came from discharged or disgruntled former employees.

Despite the miners Friday statements, Ohio Democrats have requested a federal investigation regarding Murrays campaign contributions and practices.

1,500 Coal Mining Jobs Created Since Obama Took Office (Updated)

Over at Coal Tattoo, Ken Ward has a must read piece on why state politicians and the media avoid having a balanced discussion regarding the impact of the coal industry. One of the central reasons why our state is unable to have a rational discussion is the propaganda and inflammatory rhetoric coming from the coal industry.

According to the narrative, there has been a growing "war on coal" ever since President Obama took office in 2009 and the EPA began cracking down on mountain top removal mining permits. According to industry front groups such as Faces of Coal, West Virginia is smack in the middle of "Obama's NO JOB ZONE," as see in this billboard along Interstate 64.

While the Obama administration and the EPA may be taking a harder look at mountain top removal mining permits, a quick look at coal mining employment in West Virginia reveals that since Obama took office in the winter of 2009 coal mining employment has grown by over 1,500 jobs or by 7.4%. If we measure from the end of the national recession in June 2009 (or the 2nd Quarter of 2009) to the third-quarter of 2011 (the latest available data), employment in the coal mining industry has grown by 3,100. For comparison, total employment in West Virginia has only grown by 2.9% over this period.

The notion that Mr. Obama has declared "war on coal," could have ramifications beyond Ohio. Anger toward the Obama administration is boiling over in coal mining areas of West Virginia like Mingo County, where some residents blame the president for mine and plant closures and lost jobs (Democratic West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin has aggressively distanced himself from the president and his policies on coal.) And while Obama has little chance of taking West Virginia regardless of his position on coal, the industry is also BIG TIME in nearby Pennsylvania where the president holds a single-digit lead in recent polls, as well as the crucial swing state of Virginia.

Obama shuts down coal mine in Ohio. If you live in Ohio, DO NOT VOTE FOR OBAMA

actually, the owner shut the coal mine down. he's a 1%er, ubber-rich GOP quackjob that would rather close a factory down, point the finger at Obama, just for the hell of it, to protect his private jets and mansions, and not have to deal with the Clean Air Act's (passed 20 years ago) mandatory implementation of clean air standards....

he's using the quality of life of families for his own personal agenda, for his own personal gain, that's what concentrating too much money in the hands of a few does.... it gives them waaay too much leverage... now he can tell all of his employees, an obama win means i'll FIRE YOU!, SEE I'VE DONE IT BEFORE! that's coercion and manipulation and it's croney capitalism and this is the type of 'job creators' you defend.

i just threw up a little bit in my mouth. ugh...

so what? the guy is going to protect his standard of living and pass ol' Obama's tax onto the worker. that's the problem with the democrat tax plan is that they tax the uber rich who pass on the tax to employees who take the fall.

taxing the rich costs the middle class and low income people. until the government steps in and tells businesses how they should run their business in totality, this is going to be the way it is. if that day does come, we will call it communism where everybody's playing field is even. instead of some people being happy and others being miserable, we will all be equally miserable and will have nothing to work toward because there will be no incentive.
