co2 breakthrough

Hey everyone. I, as well as alot of you are appearantly interested in using co2. For my puropses, the yeast and sugar method is not for me. It is too, unpredictable, and just not enough co2 in my opinion. I'd end up with a dozen bottles in my grow room, and with my luck, I'd spill some and have an accident with my light. Getting and lugging tanks around isnt for me either. Too expensive, too heavy....Too lazy! lol

So I need something better than the yeast method, yet cheaper than the tanks. I settled on the co2boost.com method for my 1st grow...and I like this, as it does work, and it lasts too. Now my problem is PRICE, I am just too cheap to spend the $100.00 per grow, even if it is worth it.

So I have been lurking around gathering information and I think I found a solution. If you are starting out fresh, you'll need some equipment, a bucket with a lid, maybe one of those 5 gallon buckets from home depot would work fine. You'll also need a fish tank pump and some hose. This part of your expense is NOT a recurring expense, you spend it once and you own it for life. You may even have a bucket laying around, if so wash it thorougly first. Use a capful of bleach in the water when washing.

You still with me so far? Great! What I believe is inside the bucket is: Mushroom substrate innoculated with mushroom spores.
As the mycelium grows through the substrate bag it expires co2. The pump and tubes are the system to disperse the co2.

You knock up a couple bags of sterilized grain substrate and place them in a mid sized container and rig up an air pump with an exhaust system that would concentrate the co2 in the right areas. They could be inoculated with pretty much any strain, maybe even an oyster mushroom strain. This keeps it legal!

Taking it a step further:

Couple bags here and there from mushbox.com might run you 30 bucks or so.
(Not so sure yet that you'll need a couple of bags for one grow)
Making some liquid inoculant for new bags you inoculate would keep your costs down, so would making your own substrate bags.
Plenty of teks like that around this site if you're inclined to do so.

I guarantee those co2 booster things are a product that are made to order.
They probably have all these inoculated substrate bags waiting to be put inside the buckets.
I bet the buckets are sealed so you don't know the contents inside it.
You could buy one, crack it open and spawn some of the colonized substrate to some sterilized substrate.
Peace

Lots of options to replicate something comparable to this on the dime.

yeah Im similar the buckets seem like a good thing.I have been looking for a local store to kinda see what one is made up of or a used or broken ebay buy to tear one down as it cant be to be difficult once you see its"guts".I got a co2 injection set up which cost me about $100 for tank timer solenoid tubing and first tank fill which was a real cheap setup.Tank cost about 8 bucks a fill for 20 lb tank and hoping 1 tanl every month and half 2 months

FilthyFletch, they have a map at the site showing what retailers carry it at what cities.

I kinda like the above method.....and as I got to thinking, and this won't apply to everyone, only some, but if your going to go through the effort of doing what I've posted above, why not get some magic mushroom spores?
Than as you start to harvest, you can start to grow out the myc you grew in the bucket.......hmmmmmmmm free magic mushrooms anyone?

Again if yr not into magic shrooms you could make oyster or some other gourmet mushroom and eat em when yr done.

Geez thanks Purple, trust me, I am learning too! I've learned tons since getting here.
Peace

My Magic mushroom kit is already on its way but that was a whole other thought mmmm aaahhhh the tracers I like them

oh dude....... well ok, it'll work but this other place is like half the price.
Do you understand "dunking" if not you'll need to learn it, its simple. Dunking allows you to harvest, and than re-harvest several more times atleast. This way you'll really get your moneys worth.

Basically it is placing the cake (after your 1st harvest of course into a baggie filled with water, place in refrigerator for 24 hours, than harvest again!

AMAZING NATURE, psychoactive herbs, seeds, mushrooms and cacti

What you bought will be a good learning experience.
After your done with that, lets talk about getting you a real kit.
I know a little bit to be able to help you pick the right growing kit.
You can even make one cheap enough, and you dont even have to worry about lumens! lol

When you said you bought a kit, I thought you meant something like this:

Thata alot more involved system isnt it? I only grew shrooms like twice along time ago with a friend who had me home brewing with pressure cookers and syringes and petri dishes and it took forever and was pretty unforgiving if you were not careful.Hows that kit is it mix and go or you have to monitor it?

Also how much is the shipping from overseas from that sites seems to be in euro and euros are like what 1 equals 2 us dollars?

Dude, i dont kow about the conversion but you can make one cheap enough too. there are ways around using the pressure cooker, like buying presterilized substrate jars. Just innoculate and your off to the races. Email them for prices I guess, too stoned to look right now.

For now deal with what you ordered, it'll keep you busy for a few months.
Peace

video that's genius. I personally have ZERO, ZIP experience with mushrooms but seeing how this technique seems like it could work so good, I might have to dabble in that direction to. Hey video, think you could provide me with some basic knowledge?

Aight so if you grow mushrooms for the CO2, you don't have to harvest them right? You can let them sit there and respirate for a while right?

Dude I got it bad, I have 1 seed from a bag growing in shredded damp tissue paper, in my lizards cage (protected) about 2.5" to 3" under his reptiglow 8.0

Still getting some stuff together and planning. However I have used what I know to make that shit grow, the seedling tripled in size since yesterday haha. Not bad eh?

Hey Purple, to be honest with ya, I am still trying to devote some time to this, to learn more. Off the subject, I have attempted to grow magic shrooms a few times, with mostly failures. I asked a moderator over a a shroom site I visit, here is the exact response I received regarding growing shrooms for co2...........................

"I watched the video on their site, it appears they're using a mix of various substrates and inoculating them with an unknown mushroom strain.
As the mycelium grows through the substrate bag it expires co2. The pump and tubes are the system to disperse the co2.

You could knock up a couple bags of sterilized grain substrate and place them in a mid sized container and rig up an air pump with an exhaust system that would concentrate the co2 in the right areas. They could be inoculated with pretty much any strain, maybe an oyster mushroom strain.

A refill for those things are $100, thats steep.

The poster is correct in saying that the bucket is sealed when you receive it.

Yeah I read that. Man if I had a grow going already I'd dabble in this to but I really need to concentrate on getting that going. So far I've been lucky to get at least 10 seeds (some up to 25) of each of 6 of the best strains out there for close to nothing. White Widow, Sour Diesel, Blueberry, Skywalker, Kush, and Sweet Tooth #3. Time to get started...

why not go to the grocery store and buy dry ice, and break off a bit and stick it in a can once a day hanging from somewhere above the plants.

poke a hole in the top of the can and as it disolves it presurizes the can expelling the co2 out and down to the plants. throw some ice in with it and it slows down the reaction and it lasts longer.

takes a bitty amount of effort every day, but way cheaper

store the dry ice in the fridge wrapped in a thick cloth or a card board box, it'll last until you use it all up.

thats not enough CO2 to have a effect, it would take the entire brick
