Closet Growing Question - Lighting

Hi. This is my first time growing and I have read a substantial amount of material found on the Internet but I still have a question that I would like to ask directly which is the following; How much light should I give to my 6 plants which are enclosed in a 2ft x 2ft x 2ft x 1ft 10in (horizontal) 5ft 6.5 in (vertical) space? The lighting is the most confusing thing that I have ran into so far when it comes to growing. It is also the most important so I want to be as accurate as possibly.

Thanks ahead of time. I appreciate any information that is given.

I can not afford a HPS right now but I can afford CFLs. How many of those would I need do you think? I was thinking a few 42 watts would be decent right? But how many? I will also be using y-light sockets.

Socratus what you want is those 42 w cfl's.
You can get y splitters for like .95, and hang 2 lights per socket.
I veged 7 plants and went into the 1st week of floweing with 3 42w cfls and 3 21" fluro gro lights that I got at Lowes.
The 21" were 12.95 apiece.
The cfl's were like 8 or 9 and the spliters were .95 as I said earlier.

I am about to add 3 more 42w cfl's to 3 floweing females for a total of 2 per plant.
I would deffinately like to get a HPS but, cashflow is low right now.

I would use the hps for vegging and flowering and the cfl's for my mother, clones, and seedlings.

if you add up all the money your spending on flourescents it would equal a hps
