Closet CFL Coco Grow Log

I intend this grow to be as simple, and as cheap as possible while still achieving decent results.
Couldn't find any grows relating to my specific condition/setup, so I decided to log it myself,
in hopes that someone else may find this information useful/or know what not to do if it is a horrible failure.

As stated, I wanted this to be a "pro-sumer" grow. That is to say: Educated, and very researched.
While still being noob friendly, cheap and gainful.

The following is what I have to work with, with budget outlines wherever possible.
I tried to salvage as many things as I could from previous operations/what I had around the house.

I am aware that my methods may not be amazingly correct, or even completely accurate... But this
grow is an amalgamation of all the things I have learned about growing from teh intarwebz, and the ideas that excited me the most.

I will be following a version of the Lucas Formula with a little cal mag supplemented.

Lastly, I am Canadian. Most of these measurements will be metric, with random imperial.... Cause' we're fucked like that.

---------

Just received my seeds in the mail today.

I'll cover my germination when I start just for fun.

This is my first grow, and i'm pretty jazzed to learn all I can from the community.

Specs Breakdown:

Seeds:

Multi-Strain

I ordered a bunch of strains I thought I would like (after research) from http://www.marijuana-seeds-canada.com

2x Nirvana - White Rhino - Regular
2x Nirvana - Super Skunk - Regular
2x World of Seeds - Afghan Kush - Regular
1x Green House - White Rhino - Feminized
1x Sativa Seedbank - Raspberry Cough - Regular
1x Mr Nice - Critical Mass - Regular

Total cost: ~ $26

I took a chance on likely getting some males, but I got a lot of variety on the cheap.
If I get some males, It doesn't matter that much. I'm bound to get a fem eventually.
I will make them have teh sex. And produce a lower branch or two of seeds.

In this growlog, I think i'll start with germing 1 Afghan Kush, and 1 Nirvana White Rhino, and 1 Super Skunk.
They all have almost the same flowering time.

I feel 3 will be too many plants for my growspace, but I'd rather take the higher possibility of having
at least 1 good female over only doing 2 seeds and having something go wrong/male and have to start all over again.

Grow Space

2'x2'x5' closet
(4sq feet of growspace)

I figure this to be enough (although still too small ideally) for two plants.

After I take a bunch of clones, I am going to try a SOG in this 2x2 space with about 6-8 plants.

It's not ideal, but it's all I have available at the moment.

Lights

(4) x 23w Phillips Daylight Mini Twister CFL's (6500k) = 10.98
(4) x 23w Phillips Soft White Mini Twister CFL's (2700k) = 10.98
(1) x 13w Noma Twister CFL (2700k) = Canabalized living room lamp = Free
(1) x Some random low wattage Blue Spectrum LED lightbulb leftover from mushroom grow = Free

Total wattage = ~ 200-205w

More to be added as I go along depending on budget constraints.

Again, I want more... and this is not ideal, but I can't afford the HPS setup I want at the moment, and
it's only a 2x2 space.

I have the lights on a multi-outlet extension cord (freebie) dangling from a wire rack with stabilizing "ropes" to keep it in the
position I desire.

Attached to this is as follows:

A socket block (for the side that has one plug) to turn it into 3 and balance the structure ($5)
4 Socket to bulb plugs (4) x $3.95
4 Single Socket to dual socket "y" adapters (4) x $3.75

They make an almost tree like branch out structure, and I have alternated the bulbs to get the best
light mix possible. I may remove some of the 2700k's for vegging... But I have yet to find any cfl grows where MOAR 2700k
really really fucked shit up in veg or limited its potential.

I have two timers left over from zooms. One digital, one analog. I'm opting to use the analog. For no reason. It just works. (Freebies)

Total cost of light setup to date = ~$60

Medium

Coco.
I bought a big ass bag of this a year ago for mushrooms. It is pre-shredded and fluffed.
Bought from a local hydroponics store.
When hydrated with RO water, the PH will be between 5.5 and 6.2
Little did I know, until I actually read the bag that this coir contains "trichoderma". While this is great for plants...
It really de-rails mushroom grows.

That explains a bit of trich(ed) out shroom containers....

Anyways.

I was aiming originally to grow in soil, but I had this laying around... and after researching a bit, seems like a perfectly fine medium.

Total cost = $0. Originally it was $30 about a year ago. 3/4 of the bag is left. Score.
IMG_0175.jpgIMG_0174.jpg

Nutes (Eye of)

Advanced Nutrients Micro 1L = 10.95
Advanced Nutrients Bloom 1L = 11.95
50g Sample packs of Carboload, Big Bud, Bud Blood = Freebie (included with a $25 order)
Trying to find a cheap source of CalMag to supplement the Coco. Hopefully the local Hydro store has it for cheap.

IMG_0178.jpg

(I also got some rooting hormone for clones at the same time.)

Total Cost for nutes so far = ~$25

Other:

Scored some free red dixie cups from work.
Bought a $4 Coughlan's Emergency blanket for reflectivity. - Works just swell.
Re-appropriated a small fan from work to blow air around.

I am trying to find a cheap carbon scrubber for the closet. Re-circulation only. I can't
cut a hole in the wall or ceiling, so I only wish to recycle the air in the closet.

Likely a CPU fan into a homemade activated carbon filter.

Also investing in an ONA block for odor.

Don't have to worry about these for a few weeks yet.

Total:

About $120

Thanks for reading.

I will try to update this every day or two and hopefully be able to see it through till the end.

I will also post pics of germinating and some of my setup within the next couple days.

Now that I got that over with, I have to say, looks like you did some thorough research. Welcome to the club! Already it's easy to tell you probably won't be one of those growers who "forgets" about his/her plants and lets them decline. Good luck, can't wait to see what you come up with! I've been wondering about coco grows too, opted for soil in my pots and hydroton in my DWC.

Also, I use emergency blankets for light reflection as well, you might wanna invest in a can of 3M #45 Spray On Adhesive. Makes it very easy to apply the blanket to the walls.

... Is it cliche to say that I used duct tape? TWO kinds of duct tape? ...

I totally won't forget about them. If it's anything like growing mushrooms, you end up loving them and they become your babies.

Feelsgoodman.

Thanks for posting dude. I will keep you updated.

First of all, awesome detail. It's so rare that folks ever give the deets behind their grows in this sort of way. (I know I don't.)

Looks good to me, though I noticed you're missing Advanced Nutrients' Grow of the Micro-Grow-Bloom base nute package. I must have skipped over something, but what made you skip that one?

Thanks for showing too that nutes don't have to be expensive. This is a really reasonable grow and one that I plan on following.

Peace and good growing vibes to you

From my understanding.. The Lucas formula omits Grow from 3 part formulas because the nutrients are there between Micro and Bloom already.
I'm fairly sure I read this works for almost all 3 part platforms. But I could be wrong.

2x World of Seeds - Afghan Kush - Regular
1x Green House - White Rhino - Feminized
And these are who i'll be rooting for...

I've always wanted to try White Castle (White rhino X White Widow)

Anyways thanks for stopping by my grow. Im sub for yours aswell. Gonna be a good one.

How are your temps looking? and do you have a PH kit?

gstay

Member
Temps I think are decent.

76 with the lights on, 68 with the lights off at night.
It would be slightly warmer, but the fan running in the closet cools it off.

As for a PH kit, I need to go hunt for one.

Germed 1 of each:

Afghan Kush
White Rhino
Super Skunk

The Afghan Kush broke ground yesterday, and shed its husk no problem. I'd guess and say it's going to spread its first set of leaves tomorrow.
I'm actually quite suprised how fast it's grown. over an inch in about a day and a little.

The Super Skunk is looking like it's still springing itself up. I can see the root curled around the top and back down into the soil, but it doesn't have a stalk yet.

The White Rhino is what I'm most worried about. I was afraid I'd planted it too deep (it was my first one to be planted of the 3) So this morning I dug away lightly and revealed just the tip of it.
We'll see what happens over the next day or so.

Watered them last night... 1 hour before the 4 hours of darkness. Didn't think they would need it till the 3rd day, but the coco was fairly dry.

Not gonna lie, PH kits are pretty much necessary
They are good 2 have but i know many growers who don't use them and grow fine even hydro growers its all about the plant telling you how it feels... but if u got the extra dough get a ph kit

Very informative thread! I am just getting started and am going to be using CFL's. My friend who is teaching me says not to use CFLs.
Seeing your results so far is inspiring as not all of has money for these expensive lights.

gstay

Haha. There's nothing wrong with CFL's.

Many people have produced more than fine smokeable herb from using them.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Just totalled my car today boys.

Wrapped it around a post, head on.

I got cut off going decently fast and hit some really bad slush mid-lane change, lost control.. Big storm hitting this area.

Spent the whole day waiting on/freaking out on cops, city workers, body shop, insurance, and standing in ice cold water for 5 hours.

Anyway. Writing off my car tomorrow I believe. just waiting for sure on the adjuster.

But you know... I'm sitting here tokin' and looking at my plants. At least I'm alive. Who cares about the car.

I'm alright. Not a scratch. Car is pretty much totalled.

..... Plants look solid though.

puts things into perspective...I've totalled two cars, and hope I never total another again. Glad you made it out unscathed

Day 9ish

So the super skunk failed. It was a huge seed compared to the others, and never quite germed properly (short, squat, tiny taproot).
I left it in coco for about 5 or 6 days and it was showing no growth, so I germed a Raspberry Cough to take its place. That one is doing just fine.

The Kush, and White Rhino seedlings look very different. Here's hoping at least 1/3 turn out to be girls.

#1: Afghan Kush 9 days
#2: White Rhino 9 days
#3: Raspberry Cough 2 days
#4: Some light action
