cloning question

i recently took two clones from a plant I have in late veg.
I cut the stem at 45 degrees stripped some of the outer membrane off the stem and coated the end with root gel.
I then put the clones directly into soil.
The next day when I checked on them they had wilted and collapsed.
I used mg potting soil.
Would the soil cause this to happen?

I use a mini-greenhouse(humidity dome) to keep my clones green until they develop roots. It requires a single air/drain hole about 2"'s in diameter. Use cool white lighting(outside the bin) 24/0 on your new snips. I know they'll root in the dark but the light is mainly to hold back mold and fungus until the plant has roots and has gained back it's full amunity.

Many things could have caused this to happen.... Doubt it was the MG...
I use MG Potting soil [50%] mixed with perilite [25%] vermiculite [25%] and never loose any...
Most likely your cross cut you made with sizzors or cutters... always make final cut before root hormone with very sharp blade, X/acto knife... sizzors will crimp smash when they you cut end with them... I would loose 20-25% before I switch my cutting method. Now I loose zero.000 %

Thank- you for your responses to my concerns.
I just checked on them and they are coming back.
I'm glad I didn't toss them.
They seem to be recovering nicely.
Hey bird,
I know that there are a few ways to clone and everyone has there own methods but I have been cloning straight to soil forever.
It's been very successful for me and I hardly lose any of them with this method.
I have one clone in my veg box right now that I took from a white widow that's been in flower for 25 days now.
They are both very healthy and doing well.
The two clones that had an issue were taken from another ww I have in veg right now.
She is a very healthy plant as well and that's why the wilting of the clones was a mystery to me.
I will let you all know how they are doing at the end of the day when I check on them later.
Peace

I too had been losing clones when using scissors. I went back to fresh razors. A little box of the square kind used in hand scrapers work good. Make a few cuts and pitch it. Get a new one and make a few more cuts.

Think of it like a samurai sword. Don't just hack at the stem. Draw it back and slice it. Let the blade do the cutting not your hand. Let the force flow through you.

And I never clone straight to soil but I believe a humidify dome is in order. Could prolly cut an empty 2 liter bottle in half and use the bottoms if you are only making two clones. One over each one. Make sure you burp them.

Personally, I like to clone in a mini DWC. I have a mini aeroponic set up too but my mini DWC works and is slightly less maintenance. Basically a small 1 gal tote/container, 2 inch holes with cloner plugs, water and an air stone. I fill the tote almost to the top so stems are submerged and stick an air stone in. 7/10 days later roots pop and I can put them in coco/soil. Water them directly and mission accomplished.

Most basic cloner I have heard of but not tried yet is a shot glass wraped in foil. pop a hole in the top of foil, stick your stem in and I guess that's it.

I use very sharp surgical scissors and always clean them with alcohol before I do anything.
I never use a humidity dome,I just put them in my veg box, there's plenty of humidity in there.
I have not had any issues up until now but like I said they're coming back so I'm going to let them go and see what happens.

You sound like you're asking for trouble in that veg box, what is your RH in there? I will not let my veg room get above 60% RH, if you rooms humid enough to root clones you're asking for trouble man.

I have been growing for 5 years+ and have always cloned the way I am now with a very hugh success rate.
I may be new on here but not new to growing so I think I know what I'm doing
I don't even use an rh meter in there but my clones and plants always do well so I'm pretty sure I know what I'm doing.
Thanks for your concern though
