Cloning Question: Please Help!

Hey fellow RIU'ers.

I have recently tried cloning for the 1st and 2nd time.

The 1st time I took my cuttings (cut at 45 degree angle, snipped lower leaves, dipped in rooting hormone) and then planted them in Peat Pellets. I then placed them in a homemade humidity dome under 24 hour light (23 watt CFL).

The 2nd time I around, I cut the cuttings the exact same way, however instead of using peat pellets and a humidity dome, I used beer cups and water. I've also switched to 18/6 light that is about 4 feet away.

My problem is this: During both attempts, the roots only formed from the nodes, not the very bottom of the stem. The 1st attempt 3 out of 5 were successful but they took quite a while. The 2nd attempt, which I am still currently doing, 4 out of 6 have the roots coming out of the nodes, but nothing from the base of the stem.

Why are the roots coming from the nodes and not from the base of the stem? What am I doing wrong? When I clip the bottom fan leaves I do NOT fully remove the node. I leave about 1/8" attached to the stem.

Thanks in advance!

That is where roots grow most times lol who cares where they form as long as they do! Most times when I take cuttings this is where I make my cut right in a node that exposes more rooting area!!!

Sorry guys for the delay in writing back...

how long of a stem do you start with
The stem is about 2.5" - 3" long, approximately.

Thanks Henery, I will try to make my cut right in a node next time 'round.

^^ as long as you got roots thats what matters.
Believe me, I'm very happy to see the my babies are forming roots, but I'm just confused as to why they aren't coming from the base of the stem. Thanks for the input!
