clones??how to and when

so guys im sure this is a very newb question but i still need to know....question is when in the life cycle of a plant do i need to take clones and where do i cut...pictures would be awesome lol...hope im not askin to much...i just started this endeavor and that seems to be the next step i need to take to eventually have a perpetual grow...i just want a personal garden so and easy none expensive method is kinda what im lookin for...i dont want to buy a bunch of stuff just to do a couple clones...another question...do i have to have a mother plant or can i just take cuttings off of each successive plant...thanks for any help you can throw my way..i truly appreciate it...

I keep a genetic chain as you suggest, rather than a mother. Cuttings root quickest after long dark periods, I like to take my clones a week into flower; or from seed as soon as I have enough nodes.

I find it alot easier to take clones while in the veg cycle as opposed to flower cycle. You can take clones from a flowering plant but it can be stressful for them to revert back to veg. Taking clones is inexpensive, all you need is some rooting hormone (if you prefer) a clean sterile blade, some distilled or ph'd water, and whatever medium you want to try and get it to root in. I personally use rockwool.It is also important to take clones from a healthy plant. Here is a good video (2 parts)
