"Do you take drugs, Danny?"
"Everyday"
"Then what's the problem?"

My all time fave Chevy Chase role is as Ty Webb in Caddyshack.

You know dude, I love everything the guy has done. Even in the present, his role on COMMUNITY (most under rated show in primetime) is great.

But I always heard the guy was a prick when I was growing up in the 80's. It wasn't until recently, that I bought the Vacation series on DVD did I realize this was true. If you watch the "Vacation" movies with his commentary, you'll see that he's somewhat of a self-loving douche. His interaction with "Audrey," AKA- Dana Barron, there is a certain arrogance in his banter with her. Not through out, but only a certain point.
And his commentary on "European Vacation" at the beginning he is tooting his own horn in the airplane scene.
I love the guy, don't get me wrong, but someone, somewhere, that worked with Will Ferrell compared Ferrell to Chevy Chase, because they seemed to be one in the same behind the scenes. As in, they were both "full of themselves."

So I think the bad Rep comes from those that have worked with him, and not the fans.

I've always heard the same thing too. I guess he didn't make too many friends on his sets. It's crazy though, you can be a total asshat like Mel Gibson or a train wreck like Charlie Sheen, and still have a working career, but ol' Chevy sure did fuck his career up but good. I loved his movies though!

I had never heard about the feud. Any more info on this ??
Here are excerpts from the IMDB trivia page for Caddyshack.

The famous scene that begins when Ty Webb's golf ball crashes into Carl Spackler's ramshackle house was not in the original script. It was added by director Harold Ramis after realizing that two of his biggest stars, Chevy Chase and Bill Murray (who did not get along due to a feud dating back to their days on Saturday Night Live), did not have a scene together. The three met for lunch and wrote the scene together. Although it has nothing to do with the plot, it is widely regarded as the funniest scene in the movie. This is the only time that Chase and Murray have appeared in a movie together.

Bill Murray
filmed all of his scenes, including the famous scene with Chevy Chase, in six days. (Many people expected them to have another confrontation as they had had during Chase's return to Saturday Night Live years before. They were professional and didn't show any signs of their alleged previous feud.
