how close should cfl bulbs be to the plant? first grow....on a tight budget.....had to use cfls

a couple inches and also depends how hot the bulbs are you dont wanna burn the plants
i have mine normaly at around 4 inches but they have been getting hot alot so im at like 6 now

closer the better, but an inch or 2 is ideal
cfl's can do very good work, but you do have to be a bit fussy in positioning
i started like you, cfl's because they're cheap and easy to use
but as the grows have mounted up, i may stay with them a long time

I try to keep my bulbs within a few inches of my plant. Sometimes its hard to guess how quickly your plant will grow and I have awoken a few times to my plants touching the bulbs. Each strain is different and it will just take you some time to get the feel for how close you can get away with positioning your bulbs.

i keep my cfl's as close as possible within 1 inch is ideal , as lummens decrease with every inch farther away from the plant .Its a daily thing I go through turning and positioning plants to maintain max lummens while trying to prevent any leaf tips burning.At 1 inch with a fan blowing right over the tops, I max out my potential for best yeild.

hell yea its mad work keepin up with cfls but its fun too. i burnt a couple tops already when they got too close for too long. ouch

closer the better, but don't burn them. You'll be adjusting them daily.
