5 cfls for a 4'x6' room isnt near enough,,,IMHO
depends on the wattage, 5 250w cfls might just about manage, but im asuming that only a small part of the room will be used for veg, up to about a quater of your space could probably be lit by 2 250 w cfl or 3 1 50 w cfl

hostestly man i dont know. i think it depends on what youre looking to do. the cfl grow blew me away. they did soooo much better than i thought they wouldve that i went about bought a ton of'um for my next grow.
the hps is a great light on flowering plants but it didnt do all that hot in veg. it was less work to move, made more bud sites, and the weight of the dried bud was just about 2x as much as the cfls. but it put out more heat, cost an arm and a leg to run, and was only used on a few plants.
so what i got from it was about what every1 expected. a big hps rocks if your growing all out balls to the wall. and the cfls arent too shabby if youre a smaller grower or if heat/cost are an issue. each type of light has pros and cons. both types of lights work well enough to use them for flower or veg. so just grow with what feels right for you and your grow.

There's a limited, specialist application for HPS for veg. The red-yellow HPS spectrum tends to make vegging plants a little stretchier than MH. This is a disadvantage in almost all applications except Sea of Green, where tall clones suit the SoG style better as clones are not vegged at all outside of clonebox lighting before being flowered. Counterintuitively, 24/0 HPS yields shorter internodes than 18/6 HPS.

th3bigbad, what a great job you've done with this comparison. No small amount of work, thanks for all that. :)

wow just read everything in one sitting. I'm definitely going w/ cfl. I'm turning a large garbage can into my grow box. Do you think that 2 of these 23 Watt Soft White CFL is enough for the first sages of growing? * N/A - $7.99 at The Home Depot

I'm growing White Satin which doesn't need too much light in a space that maybe 2ft x 2ft. real small

Awesome thread I also just read this in one sitting and am a noob to all of this. I am going to attempt using CFL's in my small closet. Awesome job bigbad.

cfls sweet cashed out pretty much done(doesnt require alot of cfm on fans) ..ya bite off hps or mh you run into heating issues and ventilation issues..if you can get these down hps and mh are the way to go..little spendier but lets you upgrade your grow no problem..your limited with the size of your grow with cfl's

CFLs suck and by the time you get enough tp grow 4 or 5 plants you have surpassed the cost of a 400 watt hps setup which will outgrow any cfl.I have zero heat issues running 3 400 watt hps lights 6 inches from top of plants.

CFL prolly isn't good for larger grows, but I think this expiriment proved it's the way to go for small setups. If you're getting into large amounts of plants you're obviously serious about growing and can deal with all the issues with HPS and MH.

but of course for small grows CFL's in addition to a small HPS..say 70W..would be even better

:joint:Wow you guys need to research lighting and listen to how this experiment turned out.
I am in the process of a grow. I have 2 separate rooms. One for veg one for flower. veg room is 2.5'x2.5' with a 2.5'x1' (WxH) cloning area. flowering room is a 4x9x 2 (WxHxD) common closets. I have all 26 watt CFL's. here is what I have in each room as far as lighting.

clone room= 1x 26 watt warm cfl (1750 lumens)
veg room= 2x 26 watt cool cfl (3500 lumens) (I have 10 plants in veg)
flowering room= 7x 26 watt warm cfl (12200 lumens)

that’s about 67 lumens per watt on a 26 watt cfl.
a 1000 watt hps has 146 lumens per watt. (1000 watt hps = 145000 lumens
a 1000 watt of cfls = 67000 lumens

the most common success of cfl's is that I can have as many as you can fit "around" the whole plants and any where you want them. on an hps it can pretty much only be above the plants. I have 1 plant with 1 1000 watt hps that sits above the plant and not necessarily hitting all the leaves with the same lumens. now if you get 1000 watts worth of cfl bulb and place them everywhere around the plant you would have a far greater outcome of bushiness weight color smell everything you can think of that light helps. that is why im using all cfls on my grows. it is just a far less expensive light and I can use them in more ways and areas than hps. oh and I save like a shit load of electricity using cfls.

sorry for the crappy grammar im a stoned American (we have shitty ass schools with worse English classes)
p.s. it’s really sad when we as Americans whom speak English still have people in our schools that fail English class. lol just a thought.

and I thought my CFL setup was insane... 40! Although I'm not far behind with 28 27w CFLs :) They're gonna be supplemented though, with even bigger ones. So, I've been seeing LCD grow lights to, but haven't seen them MUCH. How do yall feel about LCD grow lights?

This is one of the most interesting thread I have read. I am growing in a 9x12x8 with 1 400 wt conversion hps 1 1000 wt hps and 40 23 wt cfls and was thinking of replacing the cfls with another 1000 wt hps but now I am rethinking that. Thanks please keep us posted

I would be interested in learning about LEDs if anyone has any experience.
