CFL set up (comments wanted)

I burnt my first two grows because some idiot at a hydro store told me I wouldn't need a cooling fan with cfl's.

Anyway, so I started again with a fan and after a week my plant seems to be doing ok.

I have a 130W cfl and the little one is a 30W. I have them in Coco peat which seems to be working out brilliantly, and yes there are some slow release nutes in there, but it is half of what the packet recomended for a seedling, I am using rain water as it is winter here. My plant is 3 inches wide and 2.5 inches tall.

Anyway a couple of questions for some experienced CFL growers.

Is my plant small for 1 week since sprout? I keep reading posts about some plants having 5 sets of leaves after only two weeks!!

With my lights, should I keep my plant close to both, or just drop it down and keep the 30 W close but the 130W at distance? I see a lot of pictures with plants close to the small lights, but not a big one.

Anyway all comments are appreciated, even from other new growers, I just want to get the best yield I can, I may switch to a 400W HPS one day, but I am enjoying growing under CFL for now.

Cheers

are both lights suitable for veg stage? should be the blue spectrum ~6400k.

only other thing i can say is, if they are both veg lights then keep them both about an inch away from the plant and keep the lights spread out kinda thing. so they get as much of the light as possible.

obviously when the plant gets bigger move the lights away to suit.

what strain are u growing?

ur all good for now bro.keep the good work up.use lst for the plant to get a perfectly even canopy,so that way u will have a uniform light set up the whole time.

u should pop a couple more low watters in there like 30W put um equaly spaced around the pant to give 360 degrees of light... its looks fine for a week.. it will start to explode growing upwards in the next week or two........

the light will be fine,he dont need to update till flowering.those high wattage cfls will blow ur mind, they put out like 12000lumens by them self, wich is perfect to veg a monstrosity of a foot or so.

i know the light is fine, cus i have a 125w 6500k 12000lumen bulb and it does great.just waiting for money to clear then ill buy another light.

get two trellises from home depot. simple garden ones. when the time comes and your baby begins to mature - you will get the best results from having add'n light sources that surround the plant.

pick up 4 'bulb splitters' and a couple packs of wal-mart brand cfls in the white-blue spectrum. you won't be sorry.
so far things are looking just how they should. happy growing

Yes, the 30W is 6500K and the 130W is ultra blue 14000K. I have a 2700K 30W already and when the time comes I will run and buy a 130W 2700K.

The strain is White widow.

start more seeds!!
LOL, I would but I have limited growing space, place luckily I can legaly grow two plants so I don't see the point in growing illegal amounts. As I am new to indoor growing I thought I would just keep it to one so I am not wasting seeds.

I have been searching for these since day dot, I still can't find them in any of my local hardware stores. I might have to order one of the net, I will probably just want a two bulb splitter but I will see what I can find.

Cheers and thanks for the tips.

Thought I would just bump this up with a little update.

Plant is doing pretty good. As you can see, there is no were near 5 sets of leaves as other non cfl growers seem to get, but I am happy with the progress.

The Cocopeat is doing really well, it is near impossible to over water this plant. I water about once every three days and the leaves feel nice and firm.

Pretty soon I will have to tie down the top stem as the bottom leaves are now starting to form. I have added a second plant into the mix, just on the side picking up reflection from the mylar. It is doing ok, and if that one turns out to be a male I can switch this one over for a second shot.

Anyway here is a progress pic almost 2 weeks after sprout.

Happy growing!

The reason you want to do more than one plant is that it might turn out to be a male. Wouldn't it suck if you went through weeks of work only to find you have a male?

Also if you lose that one plant you haven't lost everything. You should start another two seeds and plant them too just to make sure you get at least one female, or at least have a better chance of a female.

Yeah I agree. But I said it a few posts up, legally I can only grow two plants, plus the reason I bought a 14000K bulb is I read that excess ultra blue spectrum helps promote females. I do have another plant growing, but I have it growing very slow at the moment (on purpose) to allow more room for this main plant.

LOL and not putting it in a bigger pot can slow down growth.
Ok, I may take the risk of repotting it, but even then, take a look at my first pic, I have hardly any head space, I do have the option of using a taller closet, but I would prefer to leave it where it is.

One question about repotting then, will a short thick pot still help the root system? Or does it need to be a deep pot?

Cheers
