im currently using 2 40 watt 6500k tubes on the top and i have 4 26 watt cfls that i use to get the lower parts light and its working terrifically i have two plants at a month and a half one i topped and its at 7 inches tall 11 wide my other one the non topped one is 9 inches tall 14 inches wide , i notice that using cfl's u get great internode spacing because of how close u can get the light to the tops

I have about 350w of flourescent light right now... somewhere around 65000 lumens- 30 plants. Theyre all little, and im not keeping all of them. But Im considering getting a 400w hps to flower with. Should I keep the CFL's in there too, and use both while flowering?

I use the 4' T5 for veg, it allows me to keep it an inch from the tops at a very even dispersment of light. but i am kind of mixed on the 1 inch thing. cause i keep reading that you need to lift the light b/w 6 and 8'' to avoid burning them. My light is very cool though so i leave it slammed on them, lol

HPS will be 2-4 feet from the plant tops. Flows will be 6-12 inches from the plant tops. You cannot use both light systems together.

Why not? Have the HPS above the plants, and the cfl's around all the sides, bringing light to the lower branches?
Side light is always an option, but that is not what you ask about. I personally use top light and place CFLs on a 2X4, which lays on top of my plant buckets. One CFL is then in the middle of four plants.

I dont think youre understanding what im asking. Is it okay to use both HPS and flurescent light while flowering? Would I be better off using solely the HPS, or should I run the cfl's, since I already have them all?

im getting ready for a cfl grow i have a 200 watt monster with a big reflector on it and a couple of the wee 23 watt cfls too i think there are about 4 of them lying around my house seeing as my brother uses a lot of them. Im not very experienced but i have grown before and helped out. i was thinking lowryder 2 feminized just because of time 9 weeks from seed to smoke sounds pretty unreal like but im open to suggestions on that front. i have a box thats about 3 and half feet high X 2 and a half feet wide but if they get bigger i can move them out. size isnt really a problem just id rather do a quick grow so lowryder seems perfect but im open to suggestions. What do you guys think? any advice?

Thanks for the help guys
Peace out

first and foremost thank you to the people that have been giving wonderful advice on this thread!
next is my retard plant.
so i've had this little bugger in soil for over a month and. . . its tiny. i'm germing 6 new seeds and with new knowledge am very high spirited. I have 2- 1075 lumen daylight flouro tubes, 2-1175(i think) lumen sunlight flouro tubes, 150 w Hps and just got 2-1600 lumen daylight CFL's. should i just nix the hps till flowering or leave it in for veg also? and if any of you very knowledged folks wanna dash over to my miserable journal and give me some advice i'll be updating it around 8 (central us)

thanks and sorry for the long post!

see how the CFLs are on the top and all the sides of the plant...

IT IS STILL NOT PERFECT - not even close.. the plants on the far right need at least 1 more CFL...

these lights are great at 1 inch... but beyond 1 inch they start LOOSING lumens.... it is important to give the leaves as much light as possible.. ALL THE LEAVES... low branches, side branches, top branches.. etc

this is another reason it is important to flower early... when using CFLS...

it is not practical to grow big plants with CFLS because it could easily take 40 CFLs to cover a 5 foot pant... LOL
How many cfls are you isuning on your setup in the pic and what watts
Thanks Toyota23TRD

I have been testing a bunch of CFL's and the 55w that are shorter with a wider spiral put out much less heat than the common shaped CFL's .
FE-US-55W 5000K Daylight Photography Compact Fluorescent Lamp

The 42w (I think that is the wattage , the room is sleeping for the night but they equal 150 incandescent) burn my plants even if they are an inch away while the wide 55w can be touching the plant with no burn . I think I am re-doing all of the side lights with them as soon as I have the funds (they are $25 a pop but well worth it) .

I find this to be very valuable information .

Got your book the other day! Can not put it down!! You rock dude!! I have one question. I noticed nothing about odor control( or I missed it). I plan on a closet grow in a 5x2x7 area. Thought of hanging a small fan an scrubber from the ceiling venting into the attic. Also was going to mount to small oscillating fans for air. Tell me what you think. Gonna order your other books soon.

envirolites r good if you have a small space, best used to flower clones.clones can be flowered at between 7 and 12 inches, 12 ounces wet can be produced easily from 400 watts of envirolite but keep them close to plant.

Hey guys,
Noob here...been lurking and learning. Had some indoor success many years ago but have decided to get back into it. Really like the idea of the CFLs. I have planned out a grow box that will house 4 plants in a straight line. The dimensions are 36"L x 32" H x 16" W. This box will incorporate 20 either 13w or 26w CFLs built into the side of the box and have 8 42w CFLs from the top. The location of this box will place an air conditioning duct blowing directly in the box at the bottom with 2 fans at the top pulling the heat out. I am going to start with bag seed and see where it goes, get the fine tuning done, then go to some real seed. I plan to veg at 18-6 for the first 15 days (15 days from when the last plant breaks the soil) then cut to 12-12. I may employ topping but I think I am a little new for scrog or lst. Maybe in future grows I will get crazy with the training.

Basically I am hoping with all the side lighting I am using, I will end up with some high yield plants. I start construction on the box next weekend. When its all done I will post some pics. This is basically a small setup for me to have some good smoke for my head. I hope it works.

Funny thing is even with the 20 (13w or 26w, not sure yet) and the 8 42w CFLs, I am still in this way less then a HPS. I will be in the whole box with lights for less then $300. A good HPS and all the trimmings will cost me $300 alone. We will see what comes of it.
