I just got a 250w MH bulb but dont have a ballast and am growing on a small scale and dont want a big garden or anything extra. Ive got a 32w CFL and its crap. Would say a 150w CFL be alright.

i think fluros are fine provided they are the plant growth variety ie osram plant grow or gro-lux these provide much better light spectrum and are especially good for starting your plants off you may feel you need to switch to mh for more dense flowering but id personally consider the higher wattage fluros available through ebay which are designed for plant growth and eat much less electric there are two types of bulb one for vegging one for flowering available in 125w 150w and 200w hope that helps u bud

Ummmm, If I was going to switch anything for flowering it would be to a HPS not MH.
