CFL Light setup

Hi guys,

I am planning to grow 2 NL in a space that is 60x60x90 cm in scrog, so it's not that much space. With that said my main problem would be heat so I am inclined to go the CFL way.

I heard that CFL lights would produce less heat that a MH/HPS I am curious if a 200W CFL (full wattage, link of the bulb found bellow) produces that much heat. This is a bedroom and I would like to be to grow without to much noise, I can extract heat from the grow room and keep a window open but I do not want to use a 150 CFM extractor fan that would blow my ears off.

My grow room has a passive intake at the bottom and a 41 CFM PC fan at the top.

But I digress from the question, how much heat would a 200w CFL bulb produce in that designated area and how much ventilation would I need considering that the base room temperature in the dorm would be about 20-22 celsius

People say watt for watt, HPS is just concentrated and it will burn as hot as 150 watts CFL combined air temp at a point..

I can say as a fact I can run 250 watt CFL in a tent, no warmer (cooler I dare say) than 150 watt hps.. It may' be overall the same heat watt for watt, but it sure dissipates nicely with the CFL in contrast and that makes a HUGE difference,


This is just one guy's anecdotal ramblings and have nothing to to with scientific fact..

Thx a lot for the quick reply this will go a long way in starting up my grow setup. I will be back with a jurnal at the beginning of october with one or two 200w cfls

...yeah, that 200watt bulb is gonna run plenty hot, ...you'll note that with CFLs of this type the ballast is built into the bulb so you get the heat of the bulb AND the heat of the ballast so CFLs actually run a little hotter than an equivalent wattage HPS.

...if heat and efficiency are your concerns then i suggest you consider PLLs which are a newer, remote ballasted, CFL which are not only cooler than standard CFLs, they are more efficient at delivering light.

...these are 55watters that i used in my clone/seed start box but they have other wattages and the lower the wattage the shorter the bulb. ...the ballasts are rated for a max 220watts so one Workhorse 8 can be used to run 4x 55watters or 6x 36watters, ...as long as you don't exceed the 220watts per ballast you're good to go.







...if you decide to go this route let me know and i'll help you figure out the wiring but i assure you it's easy if you can follow directions.
