Carbon filter setup

First of all, I'm growing inside the boiler/furnace room, 10L x 6W x 7H. I have 5 plants in one corner of the space. I do not have a dedicated air intake as the entry door are vented entirely (4ft long/ 6ft high). My question is, if I install an HTG carbon filter with 170CFM exhaust, should this be enough to get rid of the smell? I have one fan inside for circulation, should I perhaps install another one outside the door? Please help, I'm starting to freak out about the smell.
Also, I saw that majority of the exhaust systems are hooked in the the hood of the lights, is is because the odor from the plants goes up towards the light?

Thanks guys.

Alot of people hook up the filter to the light and put the filter up high cuz heat rises, so yer killing 2 birds with one stone. Smell and Heat are getting exhausted out of the box along with keeping yer light cool ... so 3 birds technically lol. If you hook up the filter should be fine, just exhaust the air outside of the room.

yes I would also like to know, where should a Carbon Filter be placed?

I am planning to have other methods to remove the smell aswell as the Carbon Filter, baking sode in tent, glade plugins, fragrant plants infront of the precious plants. Also going to have a spray bottle of squeezed lemon with some salt to spray around entrance of room lol.

Place up high, common sense dictates heat rises, plus as said, helps take heat away from light quicker. also keep your ducting straight if possible helps a bit.

The filter doesn't really matter as far as smell goes as long as you have negative pressure in the box as in you are pulling more air out of the box than what is going into the box. Most people put it high because of the heat that sits up there. that's the only reason for the filter to be placed in a specific location in the box.

Hey guys, as slojo said, you want to place your carbon filter at the top of your grow room to get rid of smell and exhaust the heat (which rises). I just have an open air hood, so I don't run any ducting through it.

CG, I remember the HTG carbon filter you were looking at, and that is going to be great for your grow room. I noticed that you said you have vents in the door. You won't want light getting in through there when you switch to flowering tho. Just a friendly reminder. :)

Ok like I said, it is not a box and it is not completely sealed off, it's a boiler room with vented door so I don't necessarily need air intake as the air gets into the space via vents in the door. I also have no way to exhaust the air out of the room so I'm only left out with the option to recirculate the filtered air. I just placed the order for the combo, I'm really hoping this will work or I'll have to throw the ladies out.
Joker, the basement is very dark at night, no worries about the light getting through during flowering. :)

I'm not so sure a 175 fan cfm with a filter is going to cut it if the goal is to eliminate smells outside of the room as it seems awfully small in comparison to your room size. Figure you have 420 cubic feet of room to work with and a general goal is to replace the rooms air with fresh air every 5 minutes. A filter attached to a fan will reduce the capacity by a certain amount, say 50 cfm's less, (I have no idea how much) so this further reduces your exhaust amount. Overall, the goal is to have more filtered air going out than is coming in so it all depends on how much air you think is being vented in.

Oh, and setups you see with air being vented through the lights is from "air-cooled" reflectors, a good way to reduce the heat of a grow room.

Hmm, didn't see the post where you stated you couldn't vent outside of the room. So basically you're recirculating air and want to filter it in hopes of reducing smell? Is there absolutely no way to create an exhaust vent?

Nope, you know how the furnace/boiler rooms are setup, usually in the far corner of the basement, away from the wall facing the outside. It's an enclosed space with a large vented door. The filter should arrive tomorrow, I'm hoping for the best.

Cool. Hopefully you won't have to scrap a whole grow. Maybe think about setting up a small tent or DIY cabinet if it doesn't work.

Best bet for your situation would be an ozone generator. Fliters dont work well if you're just recirculating the air...

Thanks everyone for the input in this thread. I've got the filter setup and it does what I wanted from the beginning, it took care of the odor in the whole house. It stinks a tiny bit when you enter the boiler room where the ladies are but don't mind it. Thanks again, Growbright's filter and fan combo made a whole lot of difference!
