carbon filter needed really bad.

so, people in my household are starting to complain about the smell, someone in here owns a business and consistently has customers in/out, as well as 4 tutors that come to the house weekly. so it's fair to say we have a large amount of company.
i already have a 4in ducting fan, only thing is, i know NOTHING about carbon filters, and i really don't have the time to look up information about it. i'm in US so please don't give me european companys.

First off what is the size of the space so that we can recommend filter size based on the area. I suggest checking out foothill filters on eBay. I like their filters because they are refillable. If your area is less than 4'x4' the 4 inch should work fine but anything bigger and I would step it up to a 6 inch.

Filters are sized to the fan. The fan is sized to the volume of the room. The fan should exchange the volume of the room every 5 min or less.

Phresh is the way to go for filters. The cheaper ones on amazon like ipower don't work well. I had the 4" ipower carbon filter (4x12") and a 4" exhaust fan in a 2x4 just like you and some strains would smell a LOT on the exhaust end. Like a LOOOOT. Piece of shit! It was brand new when it did that too.

I would get a 4x20" phresh filter, or think about upgrading to a 6" fan and getting a 6x16" phresh filter. Phresh use the highest grade carbon charcoal in their filters and pack them perfectly so they weigh a little less than the cheap filters yet they work better and last a lot longer too.

And ALWAYS suck air in through the filter unless you HAVE to do the other way around. It is much more efficient. And of course avoid bends in the ducting. I always vent the exhaust outside of a window.

Put the filter on one side of the tent up high, and the fan on the other side with a straight piece of ducting connecting them. It will help balance the weight to prevent the tent from being unstable or collapsing!

I bought two of the cheapest (different) 4" canister carbon filters off Amazon, have it sucking thru one inside the tent, and blowing out thru another, and get zero scent.

I buy the cheap ones, they work fine, I have the fan connected to it directly, pulling air out of the tent and venting it through flexiduct out the top of the tent into the attic crawlspace.

Dude, you do not have a stealth grow without one, you are risking everyone’s freedom if you are in an unfriendly state. Get it together, right about fucking now, please. I want to help but you need to plan ahead, ding dong.

Get a 6” if you can fit it in your 4x2 with six plants in it...they last a lot longer.

I also recommend a 6" for a 2x4". I had lots of heat issues with 400w of LED in a 2x4 using a 4" fan.

I just bought a cheapie 4 inch with speed cont.

And a vivosun filter? But i bought a 6 inch filter
Will be testing it in the bud drying room

As i like to oversize the filter :) there isnt a negative to over size filter but ther is if you oversize your fan to a small filter it will not work properly :)

6" is pretty fucking huge for a 4x2. This was my solution for not having to put the filter inside of the tent. Cut bottom of bucket off slide the filter into the bottom of the bucket attach the lid with the whole in it and you are gooooooood to go.20170719_185412.jpg 20170726_205730.jpg

I disagree. And odds are you'll want to upgrade from a 2x4 at some point (i disliked the height of a 2x4x5 a lot).

I follow the logic @Cold$moke mentioned. It's better to get a bigger fan for only like $10-20 more and have extra CFM to play with in case you realize your lights are hotter than u thought or a heatwave hits town. And it's better to use carbon filters at around half their rated CFM for maximum contact time with the carbon (with a 4" fan that's under 100CFM....). I was unable to keep 420w of blurple LEDs (actual watts) under 85-90f in my old 2x4x5 tent using a 4" 192cfm exhaust fan on max with the WINDOW OPEN IN COLORADO WINTER. Everyday i wished i had just bought a 6" to start.Cant imagine if I went with a 600w HPS instead.... fuck me!

Not to mention the 4" filter could not keep the odor at bay. My first grow with the filter was so stinky outside by the exhaust that literally 100 deer would crowd by the window once a week because they like the smell of weed. And you could smell it 75 feet away from my house. Second grow with the filter (in my sig if you wanna see) wasn't AS bad but it still smelled outside by the exhaust.... That was using an ipower filter and i will never use one again.

Im in a 3x3 tent now, which is barely any bigger than a 2x4 tent and I am using a vortex S line 6" 347cfm exhaust fan AND 110 less watts of lights (with a 6x16" phresh filter). Only need to turn the fan to 50% to keep temps around 80F, but when summer gets here and heats things up, ill need to run at 75-100% to keep temps around 80F. A 4" fan just wont cut it.

6" is THE way to go in any tent size bigger than a 2x2.5 and smaller than a 5x5. IMVHO and IME.

Fan on the right side next to the sock in the tent, filter on the left side connected via a straight line of ducting. Or vice versa. This is to balance the weight. The 5 feet of height you get in a 2x4 is not fun. Especially when your filter and fan take up a solid foot of it. Glad i got rid of it. 3x3 is much nicer to work in.

Here's what I mean, this is the only pic i have of my old 2x4 setup that shows the fan/ducting. This was with the 4" fan/filter, but just imagine they are 6" instead.

Lol a 6" filter isnt really much wider than a 4" one. I am looking at my 6x16" filter and my old 4x12" filter right now and the 6" filter is only 3-4 inches wider.. It's mostly just longer.. And length is obviously not an issue if you look at my pic.



And my 6" vortex S line is smaller than my 4" ipower centrifugal fan. Considerably smaller in fact. So you could use the same fan I have and if you for some reason cant fit another 3-4" of filter width in your 2x4, you could always place it outside. The 347CFM will more than make up for the fact you'd be pushing through the filter ;)
