Carbon filter FAIL - options?

I was performing some maintenance to my exhaust ducting, and when I pulled the duct out of the chimney I was hit in the face by a pungent whiff of ganja :(

My carbon filter was an el-cheapo option that came with a fan kit. I wish I had spent the extra cash cause my fan is noisy and weak too.

Question is, should the carbon filter remove ALL smell? If so, I know this one is a dud and needs replacing.

Would a more expensive carbon filter work better?

I should add that money is tight! I considered buying an ozone generator but the only one I can afford is one that sits right on the outlet, and I don't really want to put an extension cord outlet inside the tent with all that water....

Unfortunately, I believe that going the cheap route since your tight on money is going to be a let down anyway depending on how big of a growing space you have going and plant count. Nothing is going to kill the odor like a carbon filter. Some people use those smell rags you toss in the dryer with clothes. Ona Block, I believe it's called is another product. I'm sure others can chime in, but I'd try and find a way to get your hands on a presh filter, mountain air, or CAN.

So I'm right in assuming it's just the poor quality of the filter that is letting me down? I've run some tests just now, and it kills the smell up to about 65% fan power, anything above that and it's being sucked out before the filter has a chance to do its thing. Will a more expensive filter be more capable of filtering the air at the higher fan speeds?

PS I have an ONA block which does a fine job of killing smell in the room when I open the tent for watering and maintenance, but I've read that it can cause problems if kept inside the tent next to the plants, so I don't want to do that. I thought of dropping one down the end of the exhaust ducting so the air blows over it, but it's a bit of a bodge job and I would rather do things properly if money allows.

Get on ebay and order some carbon material. Dont get the pellet type. Get the crushed up kind. (more surface area). I drilled out the rivets on mine and dumped the old pellets and replaced it. Like night and day difference. Its pretty cheap and i have enough to replace it like 5 times.

Cool, I'll consider this as an option if I really can't stump up the cash for a prefab

Someone on here mentioned shaking up the carbon in the filter works for older filters as the carbon will settle over time leaving gaps which will leak.

You can get it at any pet store too, it's cheap.

Well after a 3 different carbon filters i found this is best for me 99% odour clean!
When condition is perfect like RH under 65% this filter is doing his job!!!
Unlike any other which I have tried before... and i must say... this is not the most expensive one.

Ive just changed my filter to phresh filter and using my old one to scrub the room ill let you know tomoro how it goes if I have no smell at all il suggest you get phresh or mountain air.

lol i laugh at the shake it up suggestion every time i see it
if the carbon is loose enough to shake then you have too large a space between the pieces of carbon
the carbon must be packed in so to speak air has to be forced around the carbon not just shoot on past it
repack you filter would be your best / cheapest bet
not crushing tight but packed enough that there is not any air gaps
real carbon
alot of the cheaper filters used charred coconut shells and are nothing even remotely close in comparison to real activated carbon

put the ona block in your exhaust vent for the time being
check it often they dry up pretty quick with the fan running on em constant
