Carbon filter blew up

so i made a pc growbox a couple months ago and had put in a home made carbon filter. All i did was take out the fans from some old computers and cut up the cables and added the cables to some other cable that looked equelivent to them.and tied it up with elec tape with duct tape on top. and till this day it works. But I just decided to make a new growbox for a friend of mine and i did it again. but when i plugged in a carbon filter i made it had a spark and it started smoking and the fan stopped spinning maybe into 2-3 seconds of me plugging it in. so i threw it away and made another. Same thing happened. Idk wht the problem is?

I don't think those fans are made to run on 110AC. Should be a sticker or something on it telling how to power it.

yea I dont belive it either ..

I mean look at them wires on the fan .. so thin .. must be for 12v or sumthing ..

your sure they was`t hockd up with some kind of ballast/box that convert the power ?

could be build in to the one you made that works ?

I just get them cheap bathroom ventilators from my local "walmart" better and cheaper then PC fans and they fit with my 220v blug in the wall ..




like 12$ and pull about 110M3/hr ..

I think you need to read up a bit more before you burn your fucking house down... you are plugging your 120 volt electrical cord into the 12 volt end of your PSU... That box is not just a PC fan it is the power converter that is built to turn your 120 volt ac power supply into 12 volts for your computer it generates a lot of heat and you should not be putting it in your computer grow cab let alone hooking it up the wrong way. To adequately power your computer fans you can use an ac to dc adapter that is used for cell phones or you can use that psu by pluging a pc power cord into the back of it and using the leads you are trying to connect your input power to, but i would not recommend it as i said it generates a lot of heat you would be best removing it from the computer case and sealing the case or leaving it in the case and leaving it unpowered. This is not rocket science look at your pc fans power requirements then try and match it as best as possible to the ac to dc power adapter and every thing should work fine.

hey psilocybindude before you use profanity how about you take another look at the picture? That (Power converter) is just the old shell filled with carbon. I took it out and hollowed it then put a 12volt fan into it. i just didnt know that the cable i had attached it too was a 120volt. I have done my research and found a answer to it. so everybody take care

Sorry about that then but i really could not tell from the pics either way, what i saw was a lamp cord striped and 2 striped 12 volt dc wires what other conclusion should i have come to? And you were plugging your 120 volt ac power into a 12 volt fan weren't you? I am not using profanity to insult you i am using profanity to stress the importance of knowing what you are doing before you start fucking with electricity.

lol hey poly. look it up. Some people's house blew up i think yesterday or the day b4 becuase of a growbox in a closet. find some excitement hahaha

i think you need to takes his advice in better stride you could burn a house down. and ots pretty common knowledge (had you read the DIY you got the idea from!) that computer fans cant be run on standard electricity

yes i had'nt realised it was a 120v. But i already blew the fans up so i gotta buy new ones and just rewire them with a lower Volt cable. Maybe a phone charger?

no not batteries ..

just come with a normal cord to blug in to the wall ..

tho some you have to buy the acctualy plug and wire and mount it ? dunno .. might just Bc. its realy cheap and they have to safe on sumthing not a big problem .. just take one of your old wires and use ..

they are made for bathrooms .. can get em from 10$ to +100$ depending on model and how strong they are and loud aso.

I use it for my intake (one of em)

to help provide some extra fresh air/co2 from a intake canal over my window so it come directly from out side .. to my grow room with a little help from some tubes ..

Why did you cut the entire harness off the PSU? That was stupid. All you had to do was google an ATX pinout.

Then connect the power on to a ground. Use the switch on the back to turn it on and off. Can still use the molex connectors to hook up the fans. You're using pc fans right? And that clearly is a PSU from a PC. Why on earth would you not do this?

Mr2shim. its a carbon filter. Its just the shell if you go read my earlier post. It only has a fan inside. The rest is activated carbon. The only thing i needed was a power supply for the fan. Thats why i had connected the 120v cable and failed.

yeah fuck i made the same mistake wanted to try hook up a fan to a normal plug-in cable you need an adapter for that i blew up my 12cm fan that way yeah so just use the power supply
