Cannabis makes pain more bearable instead of reducing it, say scientists

Cannabis can make patients feel less bothered about pain, according to a study.
Researchers from the University of Oxford have found the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis doesn't reduce the intensity of pain, rather it makes it more bearable.

Brain scans revealed the ingredient known as THC, reduced activity in areas linked to the emotional aspects of suffering.

While some patients have found cannabis to relieve chronic pain such as sciatica it has little effect on others, say scientists

While this had a strong relieving effect on some patients, it seemed to make little difference to the pain experienced by others.
Lead researcher Dr Michael Lee, said: 'Cannabis does not seem to act like a conventional pain medicine. Some people respond really well, others not at all, or even poorly.
'Brain imaging shows little reduction in the brain regions that code for the sensation of pain, which is what we tend to see with drugs like opiates. Instead cannabis appears to mainly affect the emotional reaction to pain in a highly variable way.'

Long-term pain, often without clear cause, is a complex healthcare problem. Different approaches are often needed to help patient manage pain, and can include medications, physiotherapy and other forms of physical therapy, and psychological support.

For a few patients, cannabis or cannabis-based medications remain effective when other drugs have failed to control pain, while others report very little effect of the drug on their pain but experience side-effects.

'We carried out this study to try and get at what is happening when someone experiences pain relief using cannabis,' says Dr Lee.
The researchers recruited 12 healthy men for the study. They were given either a 15mg tablet of THC or a placebo. They then had a cream rubbed into their skin to induce pain. Some were given a dummy cream while the rest receiving a chilli cream that caused a burning sensation.

The study was performed three more times, switching one aspect of the test for each volunteer. The patient also had four MRI tests to cover each combination.

'The participants were asked to report the intensity and unpleasantness of the pain: how much it burned and how much it bothered them,' says Dr Lee.
'We found that with THC, on average people didn't report any change in the burn, but the pain bothered them less.'

The cannabis plant: It is illegal to have, give away or sell the Class B drug. However, it is being used in a number of medical trials

Of most interest to the researchers was the strength of the connection in individuals between their right amydala and a part of the cortex called the primary sensorimotor area.

The strength of this connection in individual participants correlated well with THC's different effects on the pain that that volunteer experienced.

This suggests that there might be a way of predicting who would see benefits from taking cannabis for pain relief.

'We may in future be able to predict who will respond to cannabis, but we would need to do studies in patients with chronic pain over longer time periods,' says Dr Lee.
Cannabisis a Class B drug, which means it is illegal to have for yourself, give away or sell. While THC can make users feel relaxed it can also cause hallucinations and make people feel paranoid.

The latest study has been published in the journal Pain. It was funded by the UK Medical Research Council and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Oxford Biomedical Research Centre

My 40 years of using cannabis qualify me to say that this is exactly what I have noticed my whole life. A disassociation from the pain, either emotional of physical, rather than an actual remedy. The good news is, the results are the same. Reduced pain and discomfort.

problem being they used just THC in the test.
cannabis is much more than THC.
How about they test some CBD and get some results. Oh wait, thats already been done.

i honestly hate everything the BBC does when it comes to covering drugs. They show both sides, but they tend to lean toward the "negative." and by negative, i mean the shit they make up.

like the test they did (fairly sure it was bbc) comparing drunk driving, and driving high. they said it was just as dangerous, if not worse.

for one they used a woman...... fail test already.
not only a woman, but a woman who had never smoked weed before.

show me an experienced smoker that drives worse than being drunk...
fuck show me the same smoker who doesnt drive BETTER high.

Smoking since 1963 and I have thought about it all. Broke my back in 5 places in 1981 going over a cliff on skis. Basically - who gives a flying f how it works except for curious doctors getting grant money for research. The bottom line is it does work to relieve pain. Hypnosis does too - for some individuals who can undergo hypnosis. 99.9% of people can be hypnotized by somebody. So does accupuncture and, in many cases, accupressure using trigger points in the body known to even the most conventionally trained Western doctors, nurses and physical therapists to name a few. Most patients are aware of where many trigger points are from long experience.

Western medicine treats the symptoms and not the causes unless necessary. Antibiotics are an example of necessary. Ativan is not. Most MDs will Rx antidepressants and pain meds but shy from prescribing marijuana even in states where it is legal. The reason? Your DEA. Their surveillance agents split their workdays between asking docs for pain meds to scanning all pharmacy narcotics logs. The Fed raids on dispensaries in every state so far obviously yields the records from those dispensaries and MMJ cardholder registries obviously identify the recommending (not prescribing mind you) physician. No physician wants to draw any heat, or unwanted "patients" like DEA decoys, or anything else that interferes with their ability to make money and who can blame them?

The laws need to be changed and abusers need to be identified and treated, not incarcerated. Don't tell me everyone should be able to do anything unlimited. I worked in ERs in Phoenix, Las Vegas, Denver, Albuquerque, El Paso and Montana for 17 years. I damned sure know better. But criminalization of drug use is stupidity, counterproductive to "helping" those who truly abuse and costly as hell to us all.

as a disabled veteran with multiple injuries (no TBI) or (amputee) dealing with severe acute and chronic pain. The kind of pain that you just cant make go away. Using everything at my disposal in my arsenal pain meds, anti inflammatory, and mental meds for PTSD (psychosis) Diet, exercise, ICE, Jacuzzi, herbal meds and lotions ...the use of high grade marijuana relieves the pain and psychosis/depression. Its a give and take when the use of MJ is used for pain medication...Used in conjunction with all noted other treatment..... relief is there but, we have to be smart about it, know our body and don't abuse any of the treatment. Nothing is a cure for all. But to get ourselves to a livable comfortable atmosphere quality of life is better bearable and the ones we love can love us back, bc we take the initiative to make our live better.

Works great for me.

That study sucks though, it's not an even comparison. Chili cream? Seriously? I've dealt with pain for a number of years now, and every pain killer has a different effect. One that helps with headaches, doesn't work well with back aches, and vice versa.

Yes, MMJ helps me ignore the pain too, but lacks the side effects like narcotics. I would be more at risk in my workplace if I was on narcotic pain killers.

There could be flaws in this study. He can have an observational bias or hidden agenda against the progress. Nowhere in this story is that indicated, but should still be considered. Secondly, 15 healthy men? No women? no age ranges? MEDICINAL CANNABIS: get some people who aren't healthy. Also, these 15 ppl sound like a convenience sample from the University. Pain is just as intense but more bearable? I don't see the difference here. Beware of these "studies" you read about.

MJ is not for everyone but you can't generalize off of a 15 ppl sample. that is idiotic. 15/7,000,000,000........ Conclusion! Did this scientist check the inflammation of the burns since THC has antiflammatory properties? Sorry stuff like this pisses me off, I do research for a university and I see colleagues pull this shit all of the time.

I am applying for a grant that proves sandwiches made by someone else taste better then one you make..
any bets on this grant getting 3 mil in funding + co sponsorship..

only if you smoke it. if you eat hash oil or juice raw cannabis it cures the condition. these stuidies don't test for organic cannabis oil or cannabis juice.
