I'm going to side with nurture over nature.
Yes genetics can affect a lot, like node spacing, leaf structure, nutrient uptake, preferred ph, flowering time, and maximum size.
But there is way more that you, the grower, can do to take that bud to the max. By growing in smaller batches you can give each plant all the attention it needs to maximize potential yield.
