it seems that alot of people use high/low bay lights to grow with the simple conversion to make it a remote ballast/ light set-up. cheers once again everyone. thanks alot for your suggestions and assistance. always welcoming new ideas as well.

i also use converted highbays... heres a pic of one.. lol you kinda can see the socket is still attatched to the bracket that is for the high bay ;) you cant see the ballast, as its mounted to the outside of the cab on the left hand side....

but to answer your orginal question, its a 50/50 chance the lamps will work.
the reason being is that some agro lamps are pulse start, while most high bay fixtures are not pulse start ballasts.
it alllll depends on the lamp man bongsmilie

ps- you can tell if your ballast is pulse start or not pretty easy. a pulse start MH halide ballast has an ignitor, a cap, and a transformer, just like a HPS... as a matter of fact, most pulse start ballasts can run MH or HPS by just switching the ignitor............
and another ps-
a probe start MH ballast (90% of all ballasts) has just a cap and a transformer

Here is my current grow using a high bay 400w m/h light with a m/h-hps conversion buld. 3rd pic is Attitude's l.a confidential(3 weeks). 4th&5th are Attitude's kushberry(4 weeks) which I'm currently lsting and seems to be working pretty good. I plan on picking up a regular hps light set up with a switchable ballast this coming week. I want the hps for my flowering and keep the m/h-hps conversion bulb for vegging. As for now I'm pretty happy with the results from the light with this grow and my last grow.

It should cost around $30(give or take $10, depending on location) a month to run those two lights for 18 hours a day, which won't be noticeable to the electric company. I'd also recommend that you use the reflectors that come with the lights, or alot of their output will be lost. The only reason I would stop using them, is if they happen to have extreme 'hotspots'(as mentioned above) and cause burning areas in parts of your garden. They only way to find out is to try it and keep an eye on them. I don't think it'll be a problem, unless they were 600 or 1000 watt lights.

Actually thats the shade that came with the light. For nutes I'm using ff grow big and ff ocean forest with some extra perlite in the mix.

Haha its nice too see alot of people seem to get these things for free and they work... I got a 400watt MH High bay from a friend for free awhile ago and just decided to start looking into making the ballast remote so i can finally use it one day. Anybody got any updates on using these lights in flowering yet? Id love too see em.

Here is a picture of my MH High Bay on my 5 day old seedlings. I have a couple of emergency blankets that I have not used yet. Thinking maybe the white walls in the shower are good enough. I just put the light in yesterday. Temp is around 80 with the exhaust fan running in the ceiling with no ducting. No fan running yet.

So far everything seems to be okay. Will see if I will have to make it remote. Right now it is hanging on a chain from the ceiling about 20" from the plants. See how well they do compared to the two 65W Spot-Gro lights and foil I had going for the first few days. :dunce:

Learning a ton just by reading on this site. Should have started reading weeks ago...

it's pretty easy.

just break everything down to the components. ballast, ignitor, capacitator, mogul (socket), etc.

clip the wires leading away from the mogul.

use a (preferably) 14 gauge extension cord and just connect black to black, white to white, and green to green.

do the same thing on the other end.

don't skimp on anything. 12 gauge works, but 14 gauge is preferable. butt splices are better than wire nuts in my opinion.

you can use the rest of the extension cord to make it plug-in-able.

Good lookin out Buck..+rep to u sir! It was simple as shit.. 2 screws inside the socket, now I just need the wire.. idk what size it is but would a cord from an old vacum work? I noticed the b/w wires were more flexable then the main pwr wires. Also.. does it matter if the bulb is hung vertical or horizontal when I use it?

If anyone is following this threadI'm future, 12 awg wire is better than 14. Not the other way around. And wire nuts are better than butt connectors. Unless of course you'd like a fire to heat up your grow. No way should you use 14 gauge wire...and it would be best to run on a 20amp circuit not a ( usually) standard 15 amp....and butt connector are best left for 12v DC stuff not the type of AC current you need to run these lights.

A few people said a 400 watt HID uses more than 400 watts, but didn't know why. One person said about 450 watts, but also didn't know why.

Here is the reason: 400 watts for the bulb, plus about 10% for the ballast. That's for a magnetic ballast (which is what those fixtures have. An electronic ballast adds about 7%
