Can I use a 400W HPS Bulb during Vegging a Flowering?

[quote=GrowTech 47 what a month?
thats how much it cost me to run my 400 hps 18 hours a day for a month thats my whats added to my bill 47 dollars a month when its on for 12 hours it only cost 29 dollars so im thinking on buying a 250 or 150 for vegging ill leave that on 24 hours i wouldnt buy a mh or conversion bulb bcause they burn out quicker than anyother light and floros have about the same amount of light output hps is the way to go

ill just settle for 1 400hps for my first plant. i need to experience this thing called 'trial and error' [=[/quote]
U CAN GROW WAY MORE THAN 1 PLANT UNDER A 400 WATT HPS RULE OF THUMB 50 WATTS A SQ.FOOT HOW MANY PALNTS CAN U FIT IN A SQ FOOT AND HOW TALL R U GROWING??

Hi all im currently in the flowering stage and i herd abt to use a hps bulb during flowering but i have also herd that a mh is better because it produces more lumens but ive used a mh during veg with a lumatek ballast set on super limens anyway so should i leave it as that or put my 400w hps in and put that on super lumens?? Thanks for any help!!:eyesmoke:

Whulka, seek out facts, not the "do this it worked for me" bullshit some have suggested to you. The details below are fact, not opinion. For veg, you need a minimum of 3,000 lumens per sq ft of canopy in the blue (6,500k) spectrum. For flowering, you need a minimum of 5,000 lumens per sq ft of canopy in the red/orange(2,500k) spectrum, more is better. This is nothing to do with w/ft since not all lights run with the same efficiency. A 400W light emits around 138lumens/W but a 600W HPS emits around 160 lumens/W. It is lumens that matter since that is a measure of light. W is a measure of power. A MH bulb puts out predominantly blue spectrum and a 400W bulb will emit around 36,000 lumens. A 400W HPS bulb will emit around 55,000 lumens, over 50% more lumens! so whoever tells you a MH bulb puts out more lumens is talking out of their arse. While on the subject, flouro's or cfl's put out a meagre 75 lumens per w max. So again, whoever said cfl for veg is the way to go is giving you bullshit advice. I spent a long time running extensive tests, as have many others and the best form of lighting for veg growth, getting good tight internode spacing, a good lumen/$ efficiency running costs is a T5HO light, emitting over 100 lumens per W. Thats over 1/3 more than cfl's. For flowering, HPS gets the most efficient g/W returns. You want good advice, get a T5HO light for veg, HPS for flower. If you want to use a single light, go for a dual spectrum bulb or MH & HPS combo. This is a more expensive option for running costs but more light = more bud. W

Dammit Woody, ya beat me to it!!! And the truth shall set you free!! HID is the only way to fly, be it MH or HPS unless you just can't feasibly use 'em.

Another thing, a lot of people believe that it's graven in stone that one must use MH for veg and HPS for flower. I have personally run several crops thru using MH thru veg and flower, HPS thru both, and then a Mixed spectrum (Both HPS and MH). I saw no discernible difference between any of the grows. Several others have done so as well. there are many many threads on just this debate. IMHO, a mixed spectrum is best, with a light cycle of 20/4 during veg. You can use either MH or HPS thru both cycles perfectly fine. Personally, I'd use MH as my choice if I had to make one. It's easier for me to work under them 'cuz HPS seems to give me a headache after a while.
