We just went thru this last week, lower wattage bulb inn a bigger ballast should cause the bulb to explode.

On the other hand putting a larger bulb in a smaller ballast is supposed to work.

We can't get 100% verification of this but have found enough to make it believable.

If you want to put the bulb in and see if it explodes we will know that at least we are 100% on that question.

Aren't envirolights those large cfl's? That would be sooo cool to see what would happen if you tried to run one of them off a HPS ballast.

If it makes any difference i think its a self ballasting bulb in which case im no expert but it will run perfect straight from mains electricity (plug), so its going through a ballast reducing it to 400w then the bulb again reduces the electric to whateva it needs. Is there anyone knows from experience.

i know from experience that if you put things where theyre not supposed to go, bad stuff usually happens :D

completely agreed with Mammal, I don't see you saving that much money by doing so. finish off with the 400w hps.
