Can I take a clone from a 10" long stem??

I would like to take a clone from this long lower stem I have, but its too long being 10".. So can I cut the long stem off the plant then chop the clone in half down to say 5" ??

I know a guy that tried this and blew up his house. Guy didn't use clonex though.

I have so many problems with clones. I prob only get them to root 25% of the time. The bottom of the cutting always turns mushy.
