get yer room set up before you start planting. how many depends on how big you plan to grow em and what methode and yes you can use a 400w hps start t finishHello there
i will buy a 400 watt HPS,and i will installed in a 4 ft Height closet , and 2 ft Width, 1.5 ft deep ..
how many plants can i get ?
can i use 400 watt HPS from start to finish ?

i wouldnt plant till you got your closet all set i made the same mistake and the light took a little longer than expected so they streched. you can use the hps from start to finish but it would be better to have a mh for vegitation. as for how many plants it all depends how long you want to veg for a 400 watt hps will cover a 3x3 space. I would recomend looking into LST and SCROG for best results in a small area.also do you have feminized seeds or regular. personaly i would plant 6 reg seeds hope for 4 females or 4 fem seeds so in that area shoot for 4 plants. good luck

did you plan for exhaust, circulation, reflectivity, and if you need to cool or heat the roomi will setup the grow closet and i will take a pictures to show you

it would work... better to just seal the room and put an exhaust and passive intake it will pull the cool air right in there no problem than you dnt need to leave the door open and you have proper air exchange pulling accross the plants
remember those plants will be there for awhile

The exhaust is to pull the hot air out of the room.. While the intake will feed in new, cooler air, keeping the room continually circulated w/ fresh air....
The smell won't be strong until the last couple weeks before harvest... But it will be very noticeable at that point w/o any ventilation...
So putting in some exhaust/intake now will help give your plants continuous fresh air, as well as getting you setup for later on when it's starts smelling.. As long as your exhaust is going outside, your golden...

the exhaust is too pull fresh air into the grow room for your plants to breathe and get heat out, smell can be an issue with some strains, thats where you use an exhaust with a carbon filter attached you could just leave yer door open if you want its just not optimal. the exhaust should be in the top of the room(heat rises) and intake hole should be at bottom opposite side of the room so the air travles accross the plants

it will be fine ??
It will be fine... but like Tussel said, it will not be optimal...
Just try it w/ the door open and see what happens...

You need to check the closets temp with the light on, and off, at the very least before planting.
Are you doing soil?
I have seen 3 and 5 plant setups work quite well under a single 400 watt hps or mh.
You do need basic air ventilation for the plants, and a small oscilating fan. You need to plan before you plant! ! !

On another note, if you are afraid of work. . . . . don't grow pot!
Even the cheap easy way takes time and energy and money. Unless you just throw seeds outdoors and forget about them. Doing the latter doesn't lead to good/chronic/kine smoke.
You can get away without CO2, without sugar boosters, without proper filters, but you will need at least panty hose on the intake(for bugs etc. ) and a small fan. Now if you have enough air coming into the closet, it will leave on its own(unless you happen to have an air tight closet. If you can get a cool tube or air cooled hood for the 400, you can cut down on a ton of that heat, and you will also be able to get the light closer to the plants. But that does mean, more money, for fans, ducting etc.

Tanx friend,money is not that big problem in my country,,hps 400 wid flactor = 45 us dolar,fans from 2 to 5 us dolars..i wil tray to put 6 fans,3 out air,3 in air,, but i couldnt find here a ph meter ! how can i control ph ? woter in shops wid ph 7 ? that we drink ? wotering wid ?
