can i run a 600 watt mh bulb on my 1000 watt magnetic ballast?

Hello everyone. title says it all. i just wanted to see if its safe to try, ive never heard of doing this until just now, i was reading an old thread on this site about what are the best ballast, and i think i read somewhere you can run 400 600 and 1000 on 1000 watt ballast? not sure if they were talking about a certain type or they they can all be used this way.

Is it dimmable?

I have personally run a 400w MH bulb off a 1k HPS ballast for over a week (just to see). A 600 should be no prob. Do I recommend it? NOPE! But I know first hand that it can be done with an MH bulb and HPS magnetic ballast Do so at your own risk though.
