I agree with Doer on that.
Honestly I believe any medium, and any grow space/light setup can work great if you have it dialed in. There is no right or wrong, just preference. As long as the plant is getting what it needs. For me, I am lucky and I am able to manage temps very easily. This allows me to run HPS in my tents without any fluctuation in temperature really. The hoods are cool to the touch and I can get them pretty close to the canopy as well.
In some places though it can be very hard to keep temps down, and that's only going to cause problems. It's more feasible for some to go with other options then, and that's the beauty of growing cannabis. There are endless methods and fun things to try.
And daka, I grow in 2 mediums. I run half my plants hydro with synthetic nutes, and the other half is in an organic supersoil. Ocean Forest/Light Warrior as a base.
